Police officers on Sunday, May 15 arrested three suspects behind the murder of 19 years old Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) student Purity Wangechi.
The main suspect John Wanyoike Kibungi, 24, who was allegedly Wangechi’s boyfriend and his two accomplices were arrested at their hideaway in Kirigiti in the wee hours of Sunday morning as they arranged to flee.
The manhunt launched on Saturday, May 14, by a combined team of detectives and general duty police officers in Kiambu led to the arrest of Wanyoike, Kanaiya Kamau and Brendan Muchiri. According to the DCI’s report, the two accomplices helped Wanyoike in killing the victim and disposing her body.
Moreover, Purity Wangechi’s body which bore visible stab wounds and strangulation marks was discovered Saturday morning by the roadside near Mburiria estate, in Kiambu county.
Police say Wangechi was in a relationship with her killer before finding out he was a thug and confronted him about it. The confrontation led to a misunderstanding between them. Therefore, Wangechi left school on Friday to meet Wanyoike in Kirigiti, to try and to sort out their issue but walked into a death trap.
In the early Sunday morning raid, police officers recovered a vegetable knife suspected to have been the weapon used to stab the victim. The three suspects are now in custody for the offence of murder.
