The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the shutdown of the Mogor Bridge on the Kilgoris-Lolgorian (B3) Road following severe overnight rains that caused extensive damage to the structure.

In a notice on February 23, 2026, KeNHA confirmed that flash floods washed away the bridge approaches at approximately Km 21 in Trans Mara, Narok County, rendering the road impassable and cutting direct access between Trans Mara West and Trans Mara South.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that the heavy flash floods triggered by overnight intense rainfall have severely damaged the Mogor Bridge along the Kilgoris-Lolgorian (B3) Road at approximately Km 21 in Trans Mara, Narok County,” read part of the Authority’s statement.

KeNHA Sents Emergency Reports

KeNHA has already deployed a contractor to the Mogor Bridge site to begin emergency works to restore the damaged section.

Ongoing efforts include stabilizing the remaining structure, clearing debris deposited by the floods, and assessing the full extent of the destruction to determine the next course of action.

“The Authority has mobilized the contractor and is currently undertaking emergency repairs on site,” the statement noted.

The road remains fully closed until further notice, with KeNHA advising motorists to use alternative routes as engineers continue working to ensure the bridge is safe for public use.

Motorists using Trans Mara routes have been urged to follow official advisories as restoration efforts progress.

Red Cross Issues Flood Alerts as Heavy Rains Continue

The closure comes at a time when Kenya is experiencing intense rainfall across several regions.  The Kenya Red Cross reactivated its SMS early warning system, citing an increased risk of flash floods in vulnerable areas. Residents were urged to avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges.

One of the alerts on February 23 read:
“Expected heavy rain may cause isolated flash floods in your area. Avoid crossing floodways, stay off flooded bridges.”

The organization warned that sudden flooding could occur even in places where rainfall appears minimal, particularly in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

KMD Forecasts Intensifying Rainfall Across the Country

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued multiple advisories over the past several days.

KMD issued an alert on February 20,  identifying counties likely to experience 20–30mm of rainfall, including Migori, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Nyamira, Siaya, Narok, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, West Pokot, Uasin Gishu, Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Kajiado, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, and southern Tana River.

The weatherman further noted that rainfall intensity is expected to increase on February 22, 23, and 24, with amounts likely to exceed 30mm in 24 hours before gradually reducing on February 25.

“The heavy rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30mm in 24 hours on 22nd, 23rd, and 24th February 2026 and spread to the Southeastern lowlands and the Coastal region, especially the south Coast. It is projected to reduce in intensity on 25th February 2026,” KMD said.

In its forecast for February 21, KMD reported that rainfall over the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, was expected to intensify to more than 20mm in 24 hours.

Meanwhile, widespread light to moderate rainfall continues in several counties, including Kisii, Bomet, Kericho, Vihiga, Nandi, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, and Kajiado, increasing the risk of downstream flooding as rivers swell and soil saturation rises.

Motorists using Trans Mara routes have been asked to follow official advisories as engineers work to restore safe passage at the damaged site.
