The Coast Water Works Development Agency (CWWDA) has interrupted water supply to areas served by four water companies over outstanding bills.

In a customer alert issued on Tuesday, August 25, CWWDA said the disconnection followed the failure by the respective water service providers to settle 100 percent of their water bills as required.

“The disconnection has been undertaken due to outstanding water bills and failure by the respective Water Service Providers to settle 100% of their water bills as required. We regret any inconvenience caused,” part of the statement read.

The affected companies are TAVEVO Water and Sewerage Company, Kwale Water and Sewerage Company (KWAWASCO), Malindi Water and Sewerage Company (MAWASCO), and Kilifi-Mariakani Water and Sewerage Company (KIMAWASCO).

The agency said the companies had accumulated outstanding water bills, prompting it the disconnect their water supply.

CWWDA apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused by the interruption.

Coastal Counties to Be Affected

TAVEVO Water and Sewerage Company serves several areas across Taita Taveta County, including Voi, Mwatate, Wundanyi, Taveta, Mackinnon, Maungu and Mbololo.

Meanwhile, Kwale Water and Sewerage Company (KWAWASCO) provides water and sanitation services across urban and surrounding areas in Kwale County. It serves Kwale Town, Ukunda, Diani, Msambweni, Lunga Lunga, Kinango, and other rural areas of Kwale County.

Additionally, Malindi Water and Sewerage Company (MAWASCO) provides water and sanitation services in Malindi town, Watamu, and surrounding areas in Kilifi County.

At the same time, Kilifi Mariakani Water and Sewerage Company Limited (KIMAWASCO) provides water and sanitation services to residents across several parts of Kilifi County.

It serves Rabai, Kaloleni, Ganze, and Kilifi South sub-counties, as well as parts of Kilifi North Sub-County.

Water Shortage

Residents in Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi and Taita Taveta are facing a major water shortage, with the four counties recording a combined daily deficit of about 327,000 cubic metres.

Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa told the Senate Committee on Lands, Environment and Natural Resources on June 18 that the counties require about 512,000 cubic metres of water each day but receive only about 185,000 cubic metres.

The supply meets just over a third of the daily demand, leaving residents with a significant shortfall.

Mugaa appeared before the committee on Thursday, June 18, 2026, after Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki sought a statement on the persistent shortage of clean and reliable water in the four counties.

He said the government had resorted to water rationing, emergency repairs on transmission pipelines and measures to reduce water losses as it seeks to manage the shortage.

The government is also regulating water vendors to prevent consumers from being charged excessively during periods of acute shortages.

The region currently depends on water sources including Mzima Springs, Baricho Water Works, Marere Springs and Tiwi Boreholes. However, Mugaa said these sources remain inadequate to meet the region’s growing demand.

One of the major projects expected to increase supply is the Mwache Dam, which is being constructed to serve Mombasa and Kwale counties.

Mugaa said the project was 86 percent complete and that civil works were expected to be completed by September 2026, with impoundment scheduled to begin in October.

Once completed, the project is expected to add about 186,000 cubic metres of water to the daily supply.

Mugaa also said the long-delayed Mzima II Pipeline Project was under review by the National Treasury’s Public Private Partnership Directorate following the submission of a privately initiated proposal.
