Details of Altercation That Preceded Shooting of MCA in Police Operation

A Member of County Assembly (MCA) is nursing serious injuries after Police allegedly shot him during an operation. Bungoma MCA Abraham Kimungui “Obama” of Kamukuywa ward was on Thursday, January 9, 2025, left nursing gunshot injuries he sustained in the police operation which happened in Kimilili Town.

This was before he was rushed to Bungoma County Referral Hospital where he was later referred to Eldoret for further treatment.

The shooting incident happened when a multi-agency operation that also involved Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers over crack down on illicit goods busted a consignment of illegal ethanol at the Mapera area in Kimilili.

Mt Elgon Sub-County Police Commander Moffat Mang’era said that the politician, reported to be the owner of the illegal consignment, had mobilized over 50 goons to disrupt and try to retain the lorry holding 35 drums of ethanol, each drum holding 250 litres.

Further, the Police boss alleged that the politician defied orders when he was signaled by the officers to stop during the incident.

“The officers pursued the vehicle and impounded a large consignment of ethanol that was not licensed,” said Mang’era.

8,750 litres of ethanol was in the lorry that was impounded and is held at the Bungoma Police Station.

The police boss while revealing that hired goons armed with crude weapons confronted the officers also said the impounded vehicle’s number plates were fake.

The MCA’s colleagues in the assembly clashed with the police following the incident.

The county assembly Leader of Majority Joseph Nyongesa claimed the police targeted to kill their colleague out of business rivalry.

He said the police did not explain to the team of MCAs who visited the police station why their colleague was shot

“Majority of the officers in Bungoma have engaged in the sale of ethanol. That is why they did not follow the right procedure when dealing with the MCA. This is purely business rivalry. They would have followed the right procedure if the MCA had gone against the law. We call on IPOA to intervene,” he said.

Nyongesa called on the relevant authorities to transfer the officers who have overstayed at the station, arguing that most of them are engaged in illegal business.

Ethanol seized

Meanwhile, Police officers from the Endebess Police Station on Thursday intercepted a lorry and seized 32 drums of ethanol.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in a statement said the operation unfolded following a tip-off regarding a lorry suspected of transporting ethanol.

“Acting swiftly, the officers set up an ambush along the Suam-Kitale road, successfully stopping the vehicle. Upon escorting the truck back to the Endebess Police Station, a search revealed that the ethanol was cleverly concealed beneath 25 bags of maize and 20 bags of animal feed,” the statement read.

The driver and his loader were taken into custody and are undergoing processing before their appearance in court.

Meanwhile, the seized ethanol drums have been secured at the station, pending further action from KRA officials.
