Kenyans and applicants from Commonwealth countries can join the British Army, the principal land warfare force of the United Kingdom.

With starting monthly pay as high as Ksh 363,000, joining the British Army, Navy, or Royal Air Force is becoming an appealing career path.

However, applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria, including age, education, health standards, and immigration status, which will be verified as part of the application process.

Commonwealth applicants applying from their country of origin must be at least 18 years old.

Those residing in the UK are eligible to apply from the age of 16. A valid passport and visa (where applicable) are mandatory to qualify for the application.

It is the individual applicant’s responsibility to ensure they have valid permission to remain in the UK throughout the entire recruitment process, up to the point of entry.

Anyone who travels to the UK without this official directive will not be the responsibility of, nor receive support from, the Ministry of Defence.

Once you begin service in the Royal Navy, you are granted exemption from immigration control, meaning you do not require a visa to remain in the UK for the duration of your service. This exemption applies from the day you commence training.

However, standard immigration rules will still apply to your family members. They may need a visa to visit the UK and might only be permitted to stay for a limited period. Additionally, they must meet the minimum English language requirements.

Minimum Income Requirements for Joining the British Army

If you plan to bring your family to the UK, you must meet strict minimum income requirements set by British immigration authorities.

To sponsor a partner, you must earn at least £18,600 annually (Ksh 3,217,800), based on the current exchange rate of Ksh 173 to the pound. For a partner and one child, the threshold rises to £22,400 (Ksh 3,875,200), while each additional child requires an extra £2,400 (Ksh 415,200).

Savings above £16,000 (Ksh 2,768,000) can be used to meet part of these requirements. After completing training, a rating in the Royal Navy typically starts with a salary of £25,200 (Ksh 4,359,600) per year.

Visa Costs

In addition to income thresholds, applicants must cover substantial visa costs. A five-year visa per dependent costs £1,532 (Ksh 265,036), while applying for permanent settlement after five years will cost £2,389 (Ksh 413,297).

To acquire British citizenship by naturalisation after 12 months of permanent residency, the fee is £1,330 (Ksh 230,090).

The Royal Navy does not offer financial assistance for these visa expenses. Settling permanently in the UK remains a voluntary choice, not a job requirement.

You’ll be given ‘exempt immigration control’ status while you’re serving. If you want to stay in the UK after your service ends, and you have served for six or more years, or have been discharged due to an illness or injury caused by your service, you will not have to pay a fee.

It is easier to apply while you are still serving. However, if you serve for less than six years, you will be required to pay a fee.

Health Status and Fitness Test

A history of health problems or the presence of health conditions that usually don’t affect your everyday life can mean that you’re not able to join, or you might have to wait to join.

If you have a history of drug dependence, you will need to provide evidence that you have abstained from the use of these drugs for at least the last 3 years prior to joining the Army.

A history of occasional use of recreational drugs won’t stop you from joining, but you must stop using any such drugs before you join.

Everyone joining the Army will need to pass a fitness test. The tests you take are the same whether you’re joining as a Soldier or an Officer. These tests are:

  • Multistage Fitness Test (Beep test)
  • Seated Ball Throw
  • Mid Thigh Pull

Age Requirements

To join the British Army as a soldier, you must be at least 16 years old. However, you can begin your application at 15 years and 7 months, though you’ll only be allowed to attend the assessment centre once you reach 15 years and 9 months.

If you’re under 17 years and 6 months, you’ll first attend the Army Foundation College as a Junior Soldier before starting Standard Entry training. Parental consent is required for anyone under 18. All applicants must enlist before turning 36.

For those looking to join as officers, you must be between 18 and 29 years old. Specialist roles, such as medical doctors, may have higher age limits. Applicants over 30 are considered only in exceptional cases.

Scholarship applicants must be under the age of 18 by August 1 in the year the award is granted.

If you’re applying to be a reservist soldier, you must be at least 17 years and 9 months old. You can apply for most roles up to the age of 42 years and 6 months, but must have joined by your 43rd birthday. Some specialist positions may allow higher age limits.

Reservist officers must also be at least 17 years and 9 months old at the time of application. The upper age limit for application is 48 years and 9 months, though exceptions exist for certain specialist roles.

Salary for Soldiers and Officers

According to the latest salary figures, officer cadets beginning their training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst earn an annual salary of £34,676 (Ksh 5.99 million).

Once commissioned, a Second Lieutenant earns £41,456 per year (Ksh 7.17 million). Promotion to the rank of Captain comes with a significant pay rise, offering £52,815 annually (Ksh 9.13 million).

Officers who reach the rank of Major receive £66,240(Ksh 11.46 million) per year.

For entry-level soldiers, the annual starting salary for recruits and privates is £26,334, which translates to approximately Ksh 4.56 million.

A Lance Corporal earns £34,083 per year (Ksh 5.90 million), while a Corporal takes home £39,565 annually (Ksh 6.85 million). Advancing to the rank of Sergeant comes with a yearly pay of £44,423, equivalent to roughly Ksh 7.68 million.
