Former Chesikaki Councilor and Mt Elgon parliamentary aspirant Nathan Wasama Masai has been shot dead by unknown assailants, weeks after officially declaring a bid for the parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.
On August 7, Kimilili Member of Parliament (MP) Didmus Barasa confirmed that the aspirant was shot in his home in Tuikut, Cheptais, on the night of August 6.
Preliminary reports indicate that armed assailants raided his residence and shot him multiple times before fleeing the crime scene, where he succumbed to the injuries.
“It is with profound sadness that I learned of the tragic death of former Councilor Mh—Nathan Wasama, who was reportedly shot at his home in Tuikut, Cheptais. My deepest condolences go to his family, friends, and the people of Mt. Elgon and the SDA church,” part of the condolence message read.
Didmus has also called for immediate action from the authorities and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of Nathan.

About Nathan Wasama
Nathan Wasama was a well-known political figure in Mt Elgon, having previously served as a councilor for Chesikaki Ward.
Under Kenya’s former local government system before the advent of devolution in 2013, Nathan built a reputation as a grassroots leader through local development issues and community interest projects.
Following the transition from local authorities to county governments, Wasama remained active in public affairs while pursuing business ventures and politics within the constituency.
The former councilor had recently declared his interest in contesting the Mt Elgon parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.
Records of local political activities show that Wasama publicly announced his candidature in June 2026 as he sought to revive his political career after years of grassroots leadership and community engagement.
His return to frontline politics through the 2027 parliamentary race had gained interest among supporters who described Wasama as an experienced local leader.
Beyond politics, Wasama was widely known as a businessperson, philanthropist, and devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church, where he actively participated in church and community initiatives.

Earlier Attacks on Former Chesikaki Councilor
In 2024, Nathan Wasama survived an armed attack in the Kapcheshari area after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle.
Several bullets struck the rear section of the car. However, Nathan was able to escape the attack without sustaining injuries and reported the incident to the police.
The latest attack on Nathan that has taken his life has raised questions among members of the public on whether the two attacks could be connected.
Members of the public have expressed their condolences to the family and friends of the late MP aspirant and called upon the government to serve justice.
According to preliminary reports, the lawmaker was gunned down by two men riding on a motorcycle.
