Residents of Moyale have been urged to refrain from feeding marijuana to their donkeys in an attempt to increase their productivity.
A welfare group for donkeys in the area recently discovered that some locals have resorted to feeding their beasts of burden bhang to make them work harder for longer periods.

During a vaccination campaign for the donkeys in the region, the welfare team revealed that residents mix marijuana with the animals’ food. This results in the donkeys unknowingly overworking themselves. The group condemned the practice and ordered strict action against anyone guilty of mistreating the animals.
Furthermore, the welfare leader claimed that some donkeys in the area are used to transport diesel, which is harmful to their health and can even burn them. The group is deeply concerned about animal abuse and the welfare of donkeys but feels that there has been a lack of action taken to address the issue.
The donkey population in Kenya has dwindled significantly, and there are growing fears that the animal could become extinct if nothing is done to protect them. Currently, there are approximately 1.15 million donkeys in the country.
