Frida Mwaka, the Swahili prime-time news anchor for NTV, was among the three Kenyans who won the international Ladies In Media Award 2022, with contestants from Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe.
The voting for the event ended on February 25, 2023, and the award ceremony was held on March 25, 2023, in Ghana. Interestingly, Fridah Mwaka was one of three hosts for the Awards Gala.
Aside from Fridah Mwaka winning the Outstanding Female News Anchor of the Year award, Catherine Kamau, an actress, won the African Female Actor of the Year award, and Maria Makau, an emerging female radio personality, won the Emerging Female Radio Personality of the Year award. Ms. Kamau beat her competitors, including Melisa Kiplagat, the Netflix Original Country Queen star.
After receiving her award, Kate Actress thanked the Ladies In Media Awards and her supporters, saying,
“Thank you so much Ladies In Media Awards, and to you my peeps, Asanteni sana, this is our win.”
Kate Actress was congratulated by her husband, Phil Director, and legendary comedian Mwalimu Churchill, who urged her to “keep winning.”

Before being declared a winner, Maria Makau expressed her gratitude for the nomination, stating, “Grateful to God for this nomination by Ladies In Media Award. At times you just never know who is looking or listening but, you keep at it.”
The Kenyan nominees who made the list include NTV’s news anchor Frida Mwaka, influencer Sonnie Carol, emerging radio personality Maria Makau, emerging female personality Violetta Ngina, humanitarian Janet Mbugua with Inua Dada, author Lizzy Ntonjira, radio personalities Miss Tess and Wanjira, Longauer; and actresses Melissa Kiplagat and Catherine Kamau alias Kate Actress.
The Awards Gala transitioned from being physically hosted in a conference room to a digital format with traditional media engagement to offer an equal experience to women in media across the continent. Ladies In Media Awards is the first-ever awards ceremony that honors women in the African media space, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
