A Rescue volunteer named Anita Joe has apologized for taking a selfie described by many as insensitive while participating in flood rescue efforts with the Kenya Red Cross.
The controversial photo captured Anita and a friend smiling in Red Cross jackets and flood victims in the background who appeared distressed and troubled.
The photo, which quickly went viral, drew widespread criticism from Kenyans who condemned Anita’s actions as insensitive and disrespectful towards the victims of the devastating floods.
Many accused her of prioritizing her own image and social media presence over the gravity of the situation and the dignity of those affected.
The controversy surrounding the photo took an even more intense turn when the image was further amplified by popular blogger Cyprian Nyakundi on X.
Public Rection to the Insensitive photo
This additional exposure then led to a public backlash, with many wrongfully directing their criticism towards Kenya Red Cross, accusing the organization of condoning such insensitive conduct.
One user tagged the organization saying, “Kenya Red Cross this is insensitive and unprofessional.”
Frank Hook expressed his disapproval saying, “This is clearly in violation of one of the guidelines to which Kenya Red Cross volunteers should abide.”

“Not everyone is out there to help it’s for social media credit to look like they are helping. This is very insensitive while branded. People have lost everything including family members the room should’ve been read,” said Cynthia Ke.
Veteran Journalist, Fred Ombachi expressed his view saying, “I think it’s more of ignorance than malice. It’s important to try and empathize even if to you, it’s just a job. The girls need some wise counsel.”
Anita Issues an apology
In her apology statement, Anita clarified that she was not an official Red Cross volunteer but had borrowed a jacket to be part of the rescue team.
She acknowledged that her decision to take and post the selfie was wrong, expressing regret for the inappropriate behavior.
“I wish I could take back the picture I posted yesterday of me being part of a noble initiative with Red Cross.”
“I’d like to clarify that I’m not a Red Cross employee neither am I a registered volunteer with them,” wrote Anita on her X account.
She further explained, “I requested to wear one of the Red Cross emblems to make it easier for us to be identified as part of the team.”
“What I did was wrong, and I sincerely apologize to everyone affected by the floods and the Red Cross team. I only took 2 photos with my phone and posted one of them.”
The incident has raised concerns about the ethical conduct expected from volunteers and emergency responders during critical situations.
Kenya Red Cross Flood Rescue Efforts
As the rains and subsequent flooding persists in various parts across the country, rescue efforts have been ongoing, with the country facing a major devastating humanitarian crisis.
The Kenya Red Cross and other agencies are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected by the floods.
