If you want to make your union legally recognized under Kenyan law, applying for a civil marriage certificate is a straightforward process.
The government provides a clear path for couples looking to formalize their marriage.
To qualify for a civil marriage in Kenya, both individuals must meet specific criteria.
Each party must be at least 18 years old, must provide full consent to the marriage, and the union must be between a man and a woman, in accordance with Kenyan law.
Steps to Register a Civil Marriage
The process begins with filling out a marriage notice form at the Registrar’s office.
This form initiates a 21-day public notice period, during which objections to the marriage can be raised.
After the 21-day waiting period, both parties must complete an affidavit under Section 11 of the Marriage Act.
This affidavit, which must be commissioned by the Registrar, affirms that there are no legal impediments to the marriage.
At this stage, you’ll also need to complete the Marriage Certificate Form.

Once the affidavit is approved and the applicable fees are paid, couples can schedule their wedding ceremony.
The ceremony must be held within three months of filing the initial notice.
On the scheduled date, both parties must appear at the Registrar’s office with two witnesses.
The marriage will be solemnized during a brief ceremony, and the marriage certificate will be issued immediately.
This certificate remains valid as long as the marriage is legally recognized.
