She became the first woman in history to run the distance in under 14 minutes, clocking 13:58.06 and surpassing the previous record of 14:00.21 set by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay at the same venue in September 2023.
Chebet, a double Olympic champion in the 5000m and 10,000m from the 2024 Paris Olympics, delivered a good performance, with a 61-second final lap, pulling away from Tsegay and Kenya’s Agnes Jebet Ngetich, who finished second in 14:01.29.
Beatrice Chebet comes from Londiani in Kericho County, where she grew up.
She specializes in long-distance races and has earned numerous accolades. She credits her grandmother, Pauline Lang’at, as her greatest inspiration to pursue athletics.
Beatrice Chebet Career and Education
Beatrice Chebet began her athletics journey in December 2015 at just 16 years old. She attended Kapkorech Primary School, where she sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2010. She later joined Samarek Secondary School, which was located near an athletics training camp.
Around November 2016, on her grandmother’s advice, she joined the Lemotit Athletics Club in Londiani to develop her career. Her parents, Francis and Lilian Kirui, supported her decision.
Her first major international breakthrough came in 2018 when she won the 5000m gold medal at the World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, with a time of 15:30.77. This victory made her the first Kenyan woman to win the 5000m title at the World U20 Championships since 2006.
