The push to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has picked up speed following allegations that he opposed the Finance Bill 2024 during a past cabinet meeting. However, Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga has defended the DP noting that the accusations are baseless.
Speaking to the media, Governor Kahiga mentioned that instead of calling to have Gachagua removed from office, Kenyans should be applauding him as the Finance bill was ultimately rejected by the public.
“I want to say that we have heard, and we have seen efforts to bring an impeachment motion against the Deputy President of Kenya based on very weak claims. They accused him of opposing the Finance Bill during a cabinet meeting,” Mutahi noted.
He also emphasized that the Deputy President has a strong connection with the people on the ground as opposed to those calling for his impeachment.
Additionally, Mutahi called out members of parliament who were trying to push the impeachment motion, stating that it was an affront to the people of Mount Kenya.
The Nyeri governor stressed that they would deal with issue when time comes while also exuding confidence that President William Ruto would not follow that route.
“Whoever feels that that is the way to go, we kindly tell them to bring it on, we will deal with it when the time comes,” he stated.
Furthermore, Kahiga called for stability, noting that two years had already been lost to political disputes.
He further highlighted the importance of MPs listening to their constituents to help reduce problems in the country, reflecting a desire for unity and progress among the Kenyan people.
“Please listen to the ground so that you do not create more problems for the Kenyans,” he added.

Former Women Rep Defends Gachagua
Likewise, former Laikipia Women Representative Cate Waruguru expressed her support for the DP stating that the people of Kenya are strongly behind both the President and his deputy.
She said that those who are trying to push for Gachagua’s impeachment are simply bitter individuals who have not accepted the fact that he is the Deputy President of Kenya.
“The people of Kenya are firmly behind the President & his deputy Rigathi Gachagua. This is not debatable -those pushing the impeachment narratives are a bitter lot who are yet to conform with the reality that Riggy G is the Deputy President of Kenya,” reads part of the post.

She mentioned that the idea of a politically motivated impeachment is not going to succeed, adding that it only exists in the minds of those who want to create divisions within the government.
Additionally, she urged for unity saying everyone should concentrate their efforts on building a stronger nation.
“Instead of allowing those negative thoughts to take hold, the focus should be on coming together as a country and working towards a brighter and more prosperous future for all Kenyans,” Waruguru said.
“The idea of a partisan Impeachment is dead on arrival and is only alive in the minds of politically handicapped individuals angling for divisions in the executive. All our focus should be directed to uniting our country towards prosperity.”
