Early life and education

Wavinya Ndeti was born on November 8, 1967, in Machakos County, Kenya. She spent her formative years partly in Kenya and later in the United Kingdom, where she pursued higher education.

She first enrolled at City University, London, where she studied Business Systems Analysis and Design and graduated with a Master of Science (MSc) degree on November 6, 1992.

Continuing her academic journey, Wavinya joined London South Bank University, where she pursued a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computing Studies and graduated on July 18, 1995.

During her time in the UK, she also gained practical experience in technology, working as a systems developer at the University of North London between 1993 and 1994, where she specialized in designing and implementing computer systems for institutional operations.

Despite later controversies surrounding the sequencing of her academic qualifications during the 2022 election period, investigations by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and rulings by the courts upheld the authenticity of her credentials, allowing her to contest the Machakos gubernatorial seat.

Professional career

After returning to Kenya in the mid-1990s, Wavinya Ndeti embarked on a career that combined her expertise in computing with entrepreneurial ambitions.

In 1999, she founded Onix Computer Services, a company focused on providing IT solutions to both private and public institutions.

Wavinya expanded her business interests in 2003 by establishing Lionix Merchants, a general trading and supplies company that diversified her portfolio beyond technology.

In early 2019, she was appointed Chairperson of the Governing Council of the Kenya Water Institute (KEWI).

Wavinya’s growing reputation as an innovative business leader attracted the attention of government agencies seeking her expertise in institutional reforms and public sector management.

In this role, she provided oversight and policy direction for water management programs, helping to improve efficiency and accountability in the sector.

Her leadership qualities and track record in both the private and public sectors led to her appointment by President Uhuru Kenyatta as Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) for Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development in January 2020.

Political Career

Wavinya Ndeti entered elective politics during the 2007 general elections, vying for the Kathiani Constituency parliamentary seat.

Running on a Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) ticket, she made history by becoming the first woman elected as Member of Parliament for Kathiani.

In the 10th Parliament (2008–2013), Wavinya was appointed Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports, where she focused on developing policies and programs to empower young people and promote sports across the country.

In 2013, she contested the position of Governor of Machakos County, once again under the Chama Cha Uzalendo party.

Despite running a vigorous campaign, she lost to Alfred Mutua, who became the first governor of the county.

Wavinya remained a strong advocate for devolution, women’s empowerment, and grassroots development, while strengthening her political base in Machakos.

In February 2022, Wavinya resigned from her CAS position to contest the Machakos gubernatorial seat in the August 2022 general elections.

This time, she ran under the Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya (WDM-K), a key party within the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

After a hotly contested race, she emerged victorious, defeating her rivals and making history as the first woman Governor of Machakos County.
