The Ministry of Education Cabinet Secretary, Julius Ogamba, has issued a directive to students who did not apply for placement through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
Speaking on Tuesday, July 1, during the announcement of KUCCPS placement results for candidates who sat the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and previous years, Ogamba clarified the way forward for those yet to apply.
The CS revealed that out of the 244,563 students who qualified for degree programmes in KCSE 2024, 201,695 — representing 83% — applied for placement.
Of these, 194,372 students (80% of all qualified) have now been successfully placed in programs across various universities and colleges.
“Of the 244,563 students who qualified for degree programs in 2024, 201,695 (83%) applied for placement to various levels,” said CS Ogamba.
He added, “Of the 244,563 students who scored C+ and above in KCSE 2024, 194,372 (80%) have been placed in programs at various levels.”

For the remaining students who did not submit applications, Ogamba urged them to take advantage of opportunities available in tertiary institutions and universities, including the Open University of Kenya.
The CS further highlighted that the September intake for the Kenya Medical Training Institute (KMTC) is ongoing.
“I encourage those who have not applied to do so and apply for programs in our universities, including the Open University of Kenya and our tertiary institutions, whose intake is continuous. For example, you can apply for KMTC, whose intake is this September and ongoing,” he said.
“They may also consider TVET programs when KUCCPS opens the next continuous TVET intake.”

At the same time, the Education CS said that the ministry witnessed the inaugural placement of students to newly established institutions, including new Teacher Training Colleges and KMTC campuses, Nyandarua University College, and Kabarnet University College.
KUCCPS places over 310,000 students
Meanwhile, KUCCPS has placed a total of 310,052 students in various programs in universities and colleges.
This year, the placement service received 20,786 applications for the Diploma in Teacher Education program against a capacity of 13,823.

A total of 11,636 applicants secured placement, out of whom 10,800 have already been placed in the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education program, which has a capacity of 11,880.
A further 836 students have been placed in the Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education program, which has a capacity of 2,735.
Another positive development is the introduction of the Kenya School of Law’s Diploma in Law to the KUCCPS placement portal, with a capacity of 500, which CS Ogamba said received overwhelming interest with all slots filled.
