Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced plans for nationwide demonstrations against the new university funding model introduced by President William Ruto.
Speaking on August 25, Kalonzo stated that many students cannot afford to attend universities due to the higher fees imposed by the new model.
He criticized the system, claiming it was implemented without adequate piloting or approval from university administrations.
“Our children cannot afford to be admitted to universities. Higher education has now become the province of the rich. This funding model is impractical, unfair, and unworkable,” Kalonzo said.
“Even the university administration has said they were not consulted. There was no piloting; parents just woke up to a fee structure running up to half a million shillings.”
Kalonzo asserted that the opposition will not allow Ruto’s government to make university education inaccessible to the poor. He argued that the government lacks the capacity to address the ongoing crisis in the education sector.
Furthermore, Kalonzo announced that the opposition will mobilize Kenyans to protest against the new funding model, which he claims favors the wealthy at the expense of the poor.
“The education sector is in crisis, and we are giving notice to this administration, which has no idea how to resolve it. We will mobilize this country to say no if you are going to make university education available only to the rich. The poor will rise and claim their position. We will not agree to the undermining of the Constitution,” he declared.

“Our team is growing, and we will go around the country to tell the people that Ruto’s government should go home because they have failed. We have the ability to get the country back on track,” Kalonzo said.

Opposition Stand on Dictatorship
Additionally, he explained that the new opposition team would not allow the Kenya Kwanza regime to return the country to dictatorship.
“We have the experience, determination, and aspiration to stand in the gap and not allow this country to revert to dictatorship,” he said.
Kalonzo also mentioned that he was one of the key figures behind the introduction of free and compulsory primary education, alongside the late President Mwai Kibaki.
