Greenwood Groove International School (GGIS) is a private institution located in Nyali, Mombasa, Kenya.

The school offers the British National Curriculum, specifically Pearson Edexcel for IGCSE and A-Level qualifications.

Kindergarten

The GGIS offers a Kindergarten program as part of its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) as per the British National Curriculum.

The kindergarten is typically for children aged 3 to 5 years, covering Nursery (ages 3-4) and Reception (ages 4-5).

The lessons include group activities to build confidence, independence, and social skills and to develop speaking, listening, and early literacy skills through storytelling, songs, and conversations.

The curriculum includes introducing phonics, early reading, and writing skills using programs like Jolly Phonics.

Expressive arts and design are also encouraged through art, music and imaginative play.

The class sizes are small, to allow teachers to tailor activities to each child’s developmental needs, with teachers trained in early childhood education, often with British curriculum expertise, supported by teaching assistants.

The children are taught how to swim from a young age by a professional instructor, and local outings to parks or cultural sites in Mombasa are organised to support learning about the world.

Junior School

Greenwood Groove International School Junior school includes children aged 5 to 11 years (Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2)

The curriculum follows the British National Curriculum, specifically tailored for Key Stages 1 and 2, preparing students for the transition to Secondary education (Key Stage 3 and IGCSE).

At the Junior School level, the children are introduced to Biology, chemistry, and physics through hands-on experiments and inquiry-based learning.

The students also learn ICT, which includes Basic computer skills, coding, and digital literacy.

Music lessons are offered, which include singing, instrument basics and music appreciation adding to Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education (PSHE) which builds life skills, emotional well-being, and social responsibility.

The teaching incorporates technology, such as interactive whiteboards and tablets, to enhance learning.

The Junior School contributes to the school’s reputation for academic excellence, as evidenced by achievements like student Maya Chege earning the Best Student in the World in English in Pearson Edexcel examinations.

Parents can provide input via the website or meetings to enhance the Junior School experience.

Senior School

GGIS Senior School program encompasses of Key Stages 3 and 4 (Years 7-11, ages 11-16) and potentially Sixth Form (Key Stage 5, Years 12-13, ages 16-18) as part of the British National Curriculum, leading to Pearson Edexcel IGCSE and A-Level qualifications.

Years 7 to 9 are considered Lower Secondary. They sit for iLower Secondary Exams which is externally assessed by Pearson Edexcel at the end of Year 9.

Years 10 to 11 mark the beginning and end of O-Levels respectively. Students sit for IGCSE Exams at the end of year 11. Years 12 to 13 are the final key stages also referred to as A-Levels.

In Year 11, Greenwood Groove International School students take their International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) exam, followed by International Advanced Subsidiary Levels (IAS) for year 12, and lastly the International Advanced level (A- levels) exams for Year 13.

The teachers emphasize on exam preparation, independent study, and practical application of knowledge.
