Did you know that the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has a special fund to help civil servants in the national government, county governments, and the National Police Service who want to further their studies?
Well, to apply for these loans, civil servants working must meet specific criteria and may receive up to Ksh 500,000.

Eligible applicants must be employed as civil servants in a Ministry, County government, or the National Police Service.
Further, HELB notes that all employers in Kenya have three main responsibilities, when it comes to handling loans for their employees which include: Employers need to let HELB know when they hire someone who is a HELB beneficiary.

Additionally, they must take deductions from their employees’ salaries based on the agreed monthly rate and that all the deductions taken must be sent to HELB by the 15th day of the next month.

The loan amount is up to ksh.500,000 per year with no processing fees.

Further, the repayment is by check-off with a period of up to 72 months (6 years).
Interest charged is 4% per year on reducing balance.
Requirements
Applicants must have an admission letter from a recognized university or training institution in Kenya.

Also, they must provide a recommendation letter from the employer.
Additionally, interested employees must avail copies of 3 months of latest payslips
The slips must be certified by the employer and with a net pay above a third (1/3) of the basic pay.
HELB will also need a certified copy of the National Identification Card (ID) and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN.
In addition, applicants must provide copies of National ID from two guarantors employed within the civil service.
They must also have a recent colored passport size photograph.
Step-by-Step Guide on how Civil Servants can Apply
1. Visit HELB Employers Portal or www.helb.co.ke and click on “Employers Portal”
– Type the name of the Employer in order to select
-Input Email and password then click on “agree with terms and conditions” to create an account.
2. Enter Your Personal Details
– Include your name, National ID number, contact information, and employment details as a civil servant.
3. Upload Required Documents
– Scan and upload the necessary documents, including your admission letter, recommendation letter from your employer, pay slips, National ID, KRA PIN, National IDs of guarantors, and passport photos.

4. Submit Your Application
– After completing the form and uploading the documents, submit your application through the online platform or at the HELB office.
5. Wait for Confirmation
– Once your application is submitted, wait for confirmation from HELB that they have received your application.
6. Application Review
– HELB will review your application and documents to ensure all requirements are met.
– Incase of any additionally required, they may contact you.
7. Loan Approval Confirmation
– After the review process, you will receive confirmation of loan approval if your application is successful.
– This confirmation will indicate the loan amount approved for your postgraduate studies.
8. Loan Disbursement
– Following approval, HELB will proceed with the disbursement of the loan to your university or training institution.
9. Confirmation of Disbursement
– You will receive a confirmation from HELB once the loan amount has been disbursed to your academic institution.
