Hill School Eldoret is a public girls’ boarding secondary school located in Uasin Gishu County. The institution traces its origins to the colonial period, having been established in the 1930s as a primary school serving European settler communities in the Uasin Gishu region, then part of the White Highlands.
It was later set up at its current site in the early 1950s and is today classified as a C2 category school, formerly known as an Extra-County school, under the Ministry of Education’s revised institutional classification.
The school’s early history is closely linked to tensions between British and Boer settlers over language and education. While Boer families preferred Afrikaans-based education, the colonial administration insisted on English instruction.
Hill School Eldoret history
This disagreement led to the establishment of separate schools, including Central School (later Highlands School) and Hill School, which was founded at a former Royal Air Force base to serve mainly British settler children.
In 1956, the colonial government merged Hill School and Highlands School in a move aimed at ending the long-standing divisions. Highlands School was subsequently upgraded into a girls’ secondary school, later becoming Moi Girls’ High School, Eldoret, while Hill School expanded and continued as a primary institution.

Over time, and especially after Kenya’s independence in 1963, Hill School opened its doors to learners of all races.
The institution serves learners drawn primarily from Uasin Gishu County and surrounding regions and has remained an important centre for girls’ education in the area.
In line with ongoing education reforms, the school transitioned to Hill School Eldoret Senior School under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework.
From January 2026, the institution began admitting Grade 10 learners, offering specialised pathways in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports, in line with the CBE structure.
Admissions into the senior school from January 2026 are determined by learner performance in the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA). This marked a shift from earlier placement systems, as admissions had previously been based on the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination until 2023.
The KCPE system was phased out following the introduction of the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) under the CBE framework.
