Kenyan students aspiring to secure a scholarship to study in the US must undergo a mix of early preparation, maintain strong academic performance, and submit targeted applications to the right funding programmes.

Most US scholarship opportunities are highly competitive, so strategy matters.

First, student should focus on his/her academic record and English proficiency.

Most US universities require strong grades and standardized tests such as TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

TOEFL and IELTS are English proficiency exams that assess a student’s ability to read, write, speak, and understand English at a university level.

For undergraduate or some graduate programmes, SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) or GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores are required.

SAT is mainly for undergraduate applicants. It tests basic mathematics, reading, and writing skills and is used to determine readiness for a bachelor’s degree programme in the United States.

GRE is used for postgraduate studies such as Master’s and PhD programmes. It tests verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills to assess readiness for advanced academic work.

A strong academic profile and good performance in these exams significantly increase chances for both admission and scholarship funding.

Second, a student should target fully funded scholarship programmes. The most well-known is the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, which funds postgraduate studies for international students.

Others include the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program for mid-career professionals, and scholarships from organisations such as the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, which supports African students at selected US universities.

Third, apply directly to universities that offer generous financial aid to international students. Institutions such as Harvard University, Yale University, Amherst College, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are known for need-based aid that can cover most or all costs if applicants qualify.

Some universities also offer merit-based scholarships for outstanding students.

Fourth, prepare strong application documents. This includes a compelling personal statement, recommendation letters, and evidence of leadership, community service, or extracurricular achievements.

Many scholarships prioritize students who demonstrate impact beyond academics.

Fifth, apply early and widely. Deadlines for US scholarships often fall between October and March for the following academic year.

Applicants are encouraged to apply to multiple programmes to increase their chances of success.

Finally, use official education advisers and embassy resources. The US Embassy in Nairobi provides verified scholarship information and guidance sessions for Kenyan students through its EducationUSA advising services.

Key US Scholarships Available for Kenyan Students

Several fully funded, competitive scholarships are available to Kenyan applicants each year.

These include the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, the Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme, and the Rotary Peace Fellowships.

Fulbright US Student Program offers unparalleled opportunities in all academic disciplines to passionate and accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from all backgrounds.

Several US universities also provide generous financial aid packages, including Harvard University, Yale University, Princeton University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Amherst College, and others that meet full demonstrated financial need for admitted international students.

Other competitive awards include the AAUW International Fellowships for women, the Clark University Global Scholars Program, Illinois State University International Awards, and the #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship for undergraduate students.
