The Government of Japan, through its Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), has opened applications for the 2026 Teacher Training Students Scholarship.
“The application window for the 2026 MEXT Teacher Training Scholarship for Kenyan teachers is now open,” read part of an update by the Japanese Embassy in Kenya.
Kenyan teachers interested in professional development in Japan can apply between December 2025 and February 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Embassy, the application deadline is Friday, February 8, 2026, by 4:30 PM.
Successful candidates are expected to arrive in Japan by September or October 2026, with the program running until March 2028, depending on the duration of the designated training course.
The scholarship provides a monthly stipend of approximately KSh 192,000 (143,000 JPY), with slight regional variations.
Tuition, admission, and entrance exam fees are fully covered. Airfare to Japan is included and return airfare is provided for those completing the program as required.
Japan Scholarship Application Process
To secure the scholarships, applicants must download the application forms from the official website: Study in Japan – Teacher Scholarship.
Completed applications should be submitted in person or via courier to the Embassy of Japan in Nairobi. All required documents must be in Japanese or English or accompanied by certified translations.
The first selection is conducted by the embassy, including document screening, written exams, and interviews.

Successful applicants are then recommended to MEXT for final selection and university placement. Applicants are instructed not to send materials directly to MEXT.
“Submit completed applications in person or via courier to the Embassy of Japan in Nairobi,” the Japanese Embassy emphasized.
Requirements
Applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Be physically and mentally fit for study in Japan.
- Obtain a new “Student” visa before arrival.
- Arrive in Japan within the specified period by the host university (usually September–October 2026).
- Return to Kenya and resume teaching at their previous institution after completing the program.
- Comply with Japan’s national health insurance.
- Be prepared to cover initial living expenses of approximately KSh 270,000 (2,000 USD) before stipend payments begin.
Eligibility and Conditions
Eligible applicants must be Kenyan nationals and university graduates currently employed as teachers at primary or secondary schools or teacher training institutions, excluding universities.
They must have at least five years of teaching experience by October 2026.
Applicants should demonstrate a genuine interest in Japan and a willingness to learn Japanese, with the ability to conduct research and adapt to life in Japan.

Certain applicants are ineligible, including active military personnel, previous MEXT scholarship recipients, or those applying for other MEXT scholarships concurrently.
Dual nationals must be able to prove renunciation of Japanese nationality before enrollment.
About the Scholarship
The program is designed to develop human resources who can act as bridges between Japan and their home countries through research and practical training in Japanese schools and universities.
Courses include education management, teaching methods, subject-specific research, and classroom observation.
Training is conducted primarily in Japanese or English, with a six-month language program available for those who need Japanese proficiency.
Upon completion, participants receive a certificate.
