Mount Kenya University (MKU) has established a Maritime Academy in Malindi, marking its first entry into maritime training.
The academy also stands out as the first non-government-sponsored institution in Kenya, dedicated to equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in the maritime industry.
This privately funded training institution will fill a crucial gap by opening new doors for students seeking alternatives outside public institutions.
Additionally, the shift will allow for increased enrollment, innovation, and an expanded curriculum catered to global maritime demands.
Through the academy, MKU aims to revive the coastal region’s economy while providing youth with the necessary skills to tap into the lucrative opportunities within the Blue Economy.
Courses Maritime Academy Will Offer
According to the institution, the academy’s training programs are designed to support Kenya’s Blue Economy which is a government priority aimed at maximizing the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and job creation.
The academy is structured to provide diplomas, degrees, and short courses, catering to different educational levels and professional needs.
Furthermore, it offers affordable tuition the institution ensures that students from diverse backgrounds can benefit from maritime education.

The courses offered will focus on marine navigation, shipbuilding, fishing technology, marine conservation, and logistics.
