Kathiani Girls High School is a national girls’ secondary school located in Machakos County. Plans for the school’s establishment were conceived in the mid-1990s by the local leaders under the leadership of the late Rtd General Jackson Kimeu Mulinge.
This was achieved in 1999 when the school opened its doors to the pioneer students as a two-stream institution, admitting the first 80 students in Form One. The pioneer candidates sat for their KCSE in 2002.
Kathiani Girls was earmarked by the Ministry of Education to be a national school representing Machakos County in 2011. The learning institution was elevated to national school status due to its growth in both infrastructure and academic achievements.
This national status was realized in the financial year 2014/2015 when the government released funds to upgrade various school facilities. In 2016, the school introduced its fourth stream in Form One.
Over the years, the institution has evolved into a modern school with a strong culture of excellent performance in national exams, currently hosting over 1,000 girls.
Over 200 students are admitted to the school annually based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with Kenya’s education policy.
Kathiani Girls performance
Until 2023, admissions at the institution were based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.
However, this was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework.
Kathiani Girls has consistently maintained a strong academic record and achieved remarkable results in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) over the years.

The school performed well in the 2024 KCSE, recording an 85 percent transition to university (351 out of 383), and retained its position as the top school in the county for the fifth consecutive year.
Kathiani’s grade distribution for 2024 includes 1 A, 2 A-, 21 B+, 73 B, 118 B-, 94 C+, 46 C, 8 C-, and 1 D+. The candidates achieved a mean score of 8.1827.
School fees
The government had earlier set a directive specifying the maximum yearly school fees that parents are expected to pay. As part of the Ministry of Education’s 2020 guidelines, Kenya’s 103 national schools were divided into four clusters.
Kathiani Girls was categorized under Cluster Two (II), which places the official annual fee limit at approximately Ksh 75,798 per student.

The actual amount paid may, however, differ slightly between schools due to extra charges imposed by individual institutions for items such as school uniforms, motivational programs, and co-curricular activities.
