From its early years as a community-focused institution, Mbita High steadily expanded its academic capacity, infrastructure, and national profile.
Mbita High School history
The school was founded before the nationwide education reforms of the late 1980s and initially operated under the former education structure.
The ‘A’ Level stream was phased out in 1989 following the nationwide shift to Kenya’s 8-4-4 education system.
Thereafter, student admission into secondary school was based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations until 2024.
Mbita High School, from January 2026, offers senior school pathways under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.
Under the ongoing transition, Form Three and Form Four learners remain under the 8-4-4 system, which will be fully phased out after the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2027 examinations.

The school is supported by an active and organized alumni body, the Mbita High School Alumni Association (MHSAA), formally structured in 2015 to strengthen infrastructure development, mentorship and student support programmes.
Among its notable alumni is the Ministry of Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, underscoring the school’s legacy of leadership and public service.
