The University of Nairobi (UoN) has maintained its position in the latest QS World University Rankings 2027, remaining in the 1,001–1,200 band globally amid growing competition among universities worldwide.
According to the rankings released on June 18, UoN ranked 1176th out of 1504 institutions.
The university recorded strong performance in several indicators, including sustainability, where it scored 93.3 points, and international research networks, where it achieved 41.5 points.
UoN also posted academic and employer reputation scores of 14.4 and 18.9, underscoring its standing among academics and employers worldwide.
The ranking has cemented UoN as a leading institution in Kenya.
UoN Retains Position as Kenya’s Top University in Latest Global Rankings
The rankings assessed 1,504 institutions, including 98 new entrants, in an increasingly competitive global higher education landscape.
According to QS rankings, the world’s top universities remain largely unchanged, with institutions from East Asia and the Middle East gaining ground rapidly, driven by improvements in research output, internationalization, and graduate employability.
“While the world’s leading universities remain largely unchanged, challenger institutions – from across East Asia and the Middle East – are becoming increasingly competitive, with upward momentum in key performance indicators,” read part of the report.

East Africa Universities
In East Africa, Uganda’s Makerere University has been placed in the 1001–1200 band globally and ranked 1061.
Meanwhile, Tanzania’s University of Dar es Salaam has been ranked in the 1201–1400 band globally, ranking 1361.
In Africa, several universities featured in the rankings, with South Africa dominating the list.
