Methods of Paying University Fees
Bank Deposits
One of the most common ways to pay university fees in Kenya is through bank deposits.
Universities maintain designated bank accounts where students can remit tuition fees, accommodation charges and other statutory payments.
Students are usually required to indicate their admission number, registration number or student number when making deposits so that the payment can be identified and allocated correctly.

After payment, the deposit slip should be retained as proof of payment and may be required during admission, registration or when resolving account queries.
M-Pesa Payments
M-Pesa has become a major channel for paying university fees because it allows parents and students to make payments from any location.
Most universities issue Paybill numbers that enable students to transfer funds directly into institutional accounts.
To make a payment, a student selects Lipa na M-Pesa, chooses Pay Bill, enters the university’s Paybill number, uses the admission or registration number as the account reference, enters the amount, and completes the transaction.
The transaction confirmation message should be kept until the payment appears in the student’s fee statement.
Many universities have also integrated digital finance systems into their student portals.
Through these portals, students can view fee balances, check payment history, download statements, and monitor outstanding amounts.
In some institutions, payments made through banks or M-Pesa are reflected automatically in the student’s account after processing.
These systems have reduced the need for physical visits to finance offices and simplified fee management for students and parents.
HELB Funding
Government funding remains an important source of support for university students.
Through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and the Higher Education Financing framework, eligible learners can access loans, scholarships and bursaries to help cover education costs.
Students are required to submit applications through the relevant government funding platforms and provide personal and family information for assessment.
The amount of support awarded depends on the student’s financial need under the government’s funding model.
Under the current funding arrangement, tuition money approved through HELB is generally sent directly to universities.
This means the amount allocated for academic costs is credited to the institution rather than being paid to the student.
Students are advised to regularly check their fee statements to confirm that HELB payments have been received and reflected correctly.
Any discrepancies should be reported to both the university finance department and HELB for investigation.
Apart from tuition support, HELB also provides upkeep funds to assist students with daily living expenses.
The board has introduced M-Pesa-based disbursement channels that allow eligible students to access upkeep money through their registered mobile numbers.
Students can also track loan status, view statements and manage some loan services through HELB’s digital platforms.
To avoid delays, students must ensure that their personal details, identification information and registered mobile numbers are accurate.
Students who are unable to raise the full amount of fees at the beginning of the semester may qualify for installment payment arrangements.
University Instalment Payment Plans
Many universities allow learners to pay a portion of the required fees during registration and clear the remaining balance later according to approved schedules.
The terms differ by institution, with some requiring a minimum percentage to be paid before registration or before students are allowed to sit examinations.
Universities encourage students facing financial difficulties to engage finance offices early rather than wait until payment deadlines have passed.
