The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has set fees that motorists will pay for the inspection of motorcycles, private vehicles, commercial vehicles, trailers, and accident vehicles.
Under the revised Traffic Act 2026, motorists seeking inspection services will pay a booking fee to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), alongside an inspection fee charged by the inspection centre.
Motorcycle and three-wheeled vehicle owners will pay a KSh200 booking fee to NTSA and a maximum KSh300 inspection fee at the inspection centre.
Owners of motor vehicles with an engine capacity of less than 3,000cc, or electric vehicles with a battery capacity of less than 150 kilowatt-hours, will pay KSh1,000 as the NTSA booking fee and up to KSh1,000 for the inspection.
The same charges will apply to vehicles with an engine capacity exceeding 3,000 cc, electric vehicles with battery capacities exceeding 151 kilowatt-hours, trailers weighing less than or more than five tonnes, and commercial vehicles, regardless of whether they weigh below or above five tonnes.
Accident vehicle inspections will also attract a KSh1,000 fee.

NTSA Licensing Fees for Vehicle Inspection Centres
The regulations also prescribe license fees for motor vehicle inspectors and private inspection service providers seeking approval from NTSA.
Under the new framework, an annual motor vehicle inspector’s license will cost KSh2,000.
Private firms seeking to operate motor vehicle inspection centres will pay license fees based on their geographical location.
Operators in Cluster One counties—comprising Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Nakuru, Machakos, Kisumu, Uasin Gishu, Nyeri, and several other high-demand counties—will pay KSh1 million for an inspection center license.
Those operating in Cluster Two counties, including Kitui, Makueni, Nyamira, Busia, Turkana, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Lamu, and Isiolo, will pay KSh500,000.
The regulations further set the license fee for a private motor vehicle inspection mobile unit at KSh300,000.

Standards to Be Used During Vehicle Inspections
The regulations also specify the technical standards that inspection centres must apply when assessing the roadworthiness of vehicles.
Among the standards are requirements governing the installation and performance of speed limiters, passenger vehicle body construction, inspection procedures, inspection centre operations, vehicle exhaust emissions, and garage repair practices.
The standards include:
- KS 2295-2 (Part 1): Performance and installation requirements for maximum road speed limiters.
- KS 2295-2 (Part 2): System and component specifications for maximum road speed limiters.
- KS 372: Specifications for passenger vehicle body construction.
- KS 1515: Code of Practice for the Inspection of Road Vehicles.
- KS 2499: Code of Practice for the Evaluation of Vehicle Inspection Centres.
- KS EAS 1047: East African Standard on Vehicle Exhaust Emission Limits.
- KNWA 2460: Code of Practice for Motor Vehicle Garages for Repair and Services.
