Teachers across the country are set to benefit from more than 30,000 promotions after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) received KSh2 billion from the National Treasury to fund the exercise.
Speaking on Friday, June 26, during the closing ceremony of the 49th KESSHA Annual National Conference of Principals in Mombasa, TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi said the commission will advertise the promotion vacancies in August as part of efforts to improve teachers’ welfare and career progression.
The promotions will target teachers serving in grades C2, C3, D1, D2, D3, D4, and D5, providing career advancement opportunities across multiple job groups.
“Ksh2 billion has been allocated to the promotion of teachers. By August, we are going to advertise the promotion vacancies, and we are going to promote more than 30,000 teachers from grade 4, I mean D4, D5, D3 to D4, all the way to C2,” he said.
“That’s not a mean achievement, and it is out of the government’s desire to motivate our teachers that the promotions have been very forthcoming.”
TSC to Promote Over 30,000 Teachers After Receiving KSh2 Billion Boost
Muturi said the exercise aims to motivate teachers, improve their welfare, and strengthen the education sector by supporting career progression.
He described the allocation of KSh2 billion for the promotions as a significant government investment in the teaching profession.
He added that the promotions will be based on merit, performance, and years of service, while also taking into account teachers who have remained in the same job group for extended periods to address career stagnation.
The TSC chairperson also disclosed that the commission has secured funding to employ 24,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.

According to Muturi, the commission is developing new career progression guidelines that will enable teachers to advance professionally without being required to take up administrative positions.
The proposed framework will establish two distinct career pathways, allowing teachers to pursue growth either as classroom professionals or as school administrators, depending on their skills and career aspirations.
The TSC Chair added that school principals and other administrators will continue to receive responsibility allowances associated with their leadership roles, while teachers who choose to remain in the classroom will remain eligible for promotions and advancement within the teaching profession.

He said the commission will conduct an exercise to harmonize teacher staffing and ensure a more equitable distribution of teachers across schools nationwide.
