Guinness World Records has officially recognized Kenyan chef Dorcas Kwamboka after setting a new world record for making three chapatis in the fastest time.
In a confirmation sent to Kwamboka on June 25, Guinness World Records announced that her application had been approved, making her the official title holder in the category.
“The application for Fastest time to make three chapatis has been successful, and you are now the Guinness World Records Title Holder,” the organization said in the notification.
Kwamboka achieved the feat on December 15, 2025, in Ongata Rongai, Kenya, when she made three chapatis in 2 minutes and 26.92 seconds. Her performance beat the previous record by 43 seconds.
Following the approval, Guinness World Records informed the chef that she would gain access to the Record Holder Zone, where newly crowned record holders can claim a digital record breaker badge and purchase official certificates, frames, and other commemorative merchandise.
The Inspiring Journey of a Kenyan Chef Dorcas Kwamboka
The Kenya Times spoke with the new record holder as she shared what motivated her on her journey.
Far from being a spontaneous achievement, the record was backed by discipline and practice.
Dorcas Kwamboka says she spent one month training every day before making her official Guinness World Records attempt.
She added that the biggest challenge was balancing speed with the competition’s strict requirements.
Each chapati had to be fully cooked and measure at least 15 centimetres in diameter, in line with the Guinness World Records guidelines.
For Dorcas Kwamboka, breaking the Guinness World Record for the fastest time to make three chapatis was about far more than setting a new benchmark.
She said the attempt was driven by a desire to spotlight chapati-making as a livelihood that supports thousands of families across Kenya.
“Chapati is not just food; it is a livelihood,” she said, noting that the business has enabled her to pay rent, educate her child, meet household expenses, and support her parents.

She also sought to elevate the craft of chapati-making, arguing that what many consider ordinary cooking is a skill that demands precision, endurance, and mastery.
Drawing from her childhood, Kwamboka described chapati as a symbol of family, survival, and love. She said this inspired her to seek global recognition for a skill deeply rooted in African culture.
Kwamboka said she wanted to prove that making chapatis more efficiently could help small-scale vendors increase their earnings by saving time, reducing fuel costs, minimizing fatigue, and producing more chapatis each day.

Challenges She Faced and How She Overcame
The journey to the Guinness World Records title, she reflected, was marked by financial and logistical hurdles that nearly derailed her attempt.
Several companies approached for sponsorship, but most declined to support her, forcing her to rely on limited resources to prepare for the challenge.
According to Kwamboka, the official Guinness World Records attempt required professionally recorded videos and photographs, certified referees, and the presence of a public officer to verify the process—requirements that came with significant costs.
Unable to raise enough funds, she appealed to professionals willing to volunteer their services, particularly for video production, to ensure the attempt met the required standards.
Her challenges did not end there. On the day of the record attempt, the shopping mall where the event was scheduled to take place withdrew the venue, leaving her scrambling for an alternative location at the last minute.
She recalled breaking down in tears while informing her supporters of the unexpected setback during a live broadcast.
Despite the obstacles, Kwamboka persevered, completed the official attempt, and ultimately secured the Guinness World Records title.
