Six people who reportedly disappeared during the June 25 protests have been found abandoned in Nairobi, according to the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), with one person still unaccounted for.
In a statement on June 27, KHRC said the first three individuals were found dumped around the Hurlingham area at about 5:00 a.m. The rights group initially reported that four other protesters remained missing and demanded their “immediate, unconstitutional release.”
Hours later, KHRC announced that three more people had also been found dumped, bringing the total number of those recovered to six.
Survivors Allege Assault in Custody
According to the commission, the six survivors alleged that they were brutally assaulted by police officers while being held in custody before being abandoned at different locations.

“Three more comrades have been found dumped. Together with the three who were found earlier, they report being brutally assaulted by police while in custody,” KHRC said in an update.
However, the rights organization said one protester remains forcibly disappeared, with his whereabouts still unknown.
KHRC called for his immediate release and urged authorities to account for his whereabouts, expressing concern over what it described as enforced disappearances linked to the June 25 demonstrations.
The commission has condemned the alleged abductions and urged security agencies to respect constitutional rights, including protection from arbitrary arrest, detention, and enforced disappearance.

On June 26, activists gathered outside the Milimani Law Courts to witness the release of other protesters arrested during the June 25 demonstrations, and said that six people who had been arrested by police could not be traced.
They said all efforts to locate the six had been unsuccessful and called on the government to either release them or present them before a court. Activists also announced plans to file missing persons reports.
“We are sending an alarm that some of the protesters who were arrested yesterday by the police, and it was caught on camera, cannot be traced. We are calling on the police and the government to release these people,” one of the activists said.
Activist Shakira Wafula also urged authorities to either release the six or produce them in court, saying their continued disappearance had heightened concern among families and fellow activists.
