The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has unveiled a new E-Certificate platform that will allow Kenyans to apply for, download, and verify KCSE certificates online.
The digital platform, accessible through the KNEC website, marks a major shift from the traditional paper-based system by enabling students, alumni, and institutions to access certificates electronically from anywhere.
Under the new system, applicants can generate digital certificates for examinations sat from 1989 to date after completing an identity verification process and paying a certificate generation fee of KSh1,200, excluding VAT and eCitizen charges.
KNEC Online KCSE Certificate Downloads: Here’s How It Works
Registration and Logging In
To access the new service, users must visit the KNEC website, click the E-Certificate portal, then select the Sign Up/Register option.
Applicants will then be required to choose their account type. Individuals seeking to access their own certificates should select the “Applicant (Student/Alumni)” option, while employers, universities, and other institutions seeking to verify candidates’ credentials should register under “Verifier Organization.”
Students and alumni must provide their full names and email addresses before clicking “Send OTP” to receive a six-digit verification code via email. The code, which expires after 10 minutes, must be entered to complete the registration process. Users whose codes expire will be required to request a new OTP.
Those who already have accounts can simply click the “Login” option on the homepage, enter their email address, and request a new OTP.
After entering the verification code, users will gain access to their dashboards and the various services available on the platform.

Updating Profile
After registering and logging in, users must complete their profiles by clicking the “Fill/Update Profile” option on the dashboard.
Applicants will then be asked to provide personal details, including their citizenship status, full name as it appears on their National Identity Card, email address, date of birth, and phone number.
Kenyan citizens will also be required to enter their National ID numbers, while uploading a profile photo will remain optional.
Before proceeding, users will have an opportunity to review all the information entered to ensure it is accurate.
Once submitted, the profile details will be automatically verified against the Integrated Population Registration System (IPRS) using the applicant’s National ID number.
Generating E-Certificate
Once the profile is verified, users can generate an e-certificate by entering their examination index number, selecting the examination type (KCSE or KCPE), and indicating the year they sat the examination.
The system then conducts two automatic checks: identity verification through IPRS and a certificate lookup to confirm that the examination details match records held by KNEC.
If both checks are successful, applicants are directed to make payment through eCitizen using M-Pesa, bank cards, or any other payment options available on the government platform.
Upon payment confirmation, the certificate becomes available for download as a PDF and includes a blockchain verification hash, allowing institutions and employers to verify its authenticity.
The downloaded certificate will remain available on the platform for six months, after which users will be required to pay again to generate a fresh copy.

KNEC Platform Allows Employers to Verify Certificates Online
The new platform also allows certificate holders to send verification reports directly to employers, universities, and other institutions. Users can upload their e-certificate, provide the recipient’s details, and pay through eCitizen to have the report generated and sent electronically.
In addition, KNEC has introduced a dedicated portal for verifier organizations, including employers, universities, professional bodies, and government agencies.
These institutions will be required to register separately, submit their incorporation documents, and obtain approval from KNEC before they can verify candidates’ credentials.
The platform further introduces bulk verification capabilities, allowing organizations to verify up to 1,000 certificates in a single request by uploading a CSV file containing certificate details and supporting documents.
To support frequent users, KNEC has also introduced a prepaid wallet system through which organizations can purchase verification credits and use them for future requests.
According to KNEC, the new system is designed to enhance security, curb certificate fraud, and make the verification process faster and more efficient by leveraging blockchain technology and digital identity verification.
