As the final group-stage matches approach at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the race for the best third-placed teams remains one of the tournament’s biggest talking points.
Under the expanded 48-team format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups automatically qualify for the Round of 32, alongside the eight best third-placed teams.
The third-placed teams are ranked based on points, goal difference, goals scored, fair play record, and, if necessary, FIFA rankings.
Currently, Sweden, Ecuador, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Paraguay are best placed to progress after collecting four points from their group matches, while Senegal, Iran, Croatia, and South Korea occupy the remaining qualification spots.

Teams Already in Strong Positions
Ecuador (24th in FIFA rankings)
After suffering a defeat to Côte d’Ivoire and being held by Curaçao, Ecuador revived its World Cup campaign with a crucial 2-1 victory over Germany in Group E. The South Americans have done enough to secure one of the best third-placed spots and will now await their Round of 32 opponents.
Sweden (28th)
Sweden could not replicate the form that saw them thrash Tunisia 5-0 in their opening match, but a draw against Japan proved sufficient. Four points have comfortably sent the Scandinavians into the knockout stages.
Bosnia and Herzegovina (61st)
Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently the lowest-ranked nation among the third-placed teams in contention, but a draw against Canada and a victory over Qatar delivered four points in Group B. Bosnia and Herzegovina has already secured a Round of 32 clash with the United States.
Paraguay (37th)
Paraguay’s campaign has been a roller-coaster. After suffering a heavy defeat to the United States, they bounced back with a victory over Türkiye before settling for a draw against Australia.
The result was enough to keep them in third place and firmly on course for qualification.
Senegal (18th)
Senegal were tipped to challenge France for top spot in Group I but opened with defeats to both France and Norway.
However, a commanding 5-0 victory over Iraq significantly boosted their goal difference and put them in a strong position to qualify.
The Lions of Teranga could also become the highest-ranked third-place qualifiers based on FIFA rankings.

Third-Placed Teams Still Fighting for Qualification
Iran (21st)
Drawn alongside Belgium and Egypt in a difficult Group G, Iran remain unbeaten but winless after recording three consecutive draws. The Iranians now face an anxious wait and may need their superior FIFA ranking to separate them from rivals.
Croatia (13th)
The 2018 finalists suffered an early setback with a defeat to England, but still have a chance to climb above third place. Given their lofty FIFA ranking of 13th, Croatia would be one of the strongest teams to emerge from the third-place route.
South Korea (23rd)
South Korea’s campaign has been disappointing, with defeats to Mexico and South Africa leaving them vulnerable. Despite sitting inside the top eight for now. The Koreans must rely on results elsewhere.
Algeria (29th)
Algeria remains one of the best-placed teams outside the qualification places. Victory over Austria in their final Group J fixture would guarantee progression, while even a draw could prove enough to advance.
Scotland (41st)
Scotland began with a victory over Haiti but failed to pick up points against Morocco and Brazil. Their inferior goal difference leaves them in a precarious position, and they can only wait and hope other results fall in their favour.
DR Congo (46th)
DR Congo is the biggest outsider among the remaining contenders. However, victory over Uzbekistan in their final Group K match would move them to four points and significantly improve their chances of reaching the knockout stages.
Eliminated: Uruguay’s Early Exit
Even with the World Cup expanded to 48 teams, Uruguay has failed to reach the knockout stages. The South Americans drew with both Saudi Arabia and Cabo Verde before losing to Spain in a match that could have seen them top Group H with a victory.
The Uruguayans’ winless campaign makes them the highest-ranked nation, at 19th in the world, to be eliminated before the Round of 32.
