An image showing duplicate Kenyan IDs with different names and numbers is making rounds online, after being shared by user Sonko 254 on X.
Sonko 254 has raised concerns about potential voter fraud in the 2027 general elections, stating that the current administration is already strategizing to rig.
The post has fueled similar concerns among Kenyans, many who have vowed to not vote the current administration in for a second term.
“This is how the government has been stealing elections, over 20 IDs belonging to one person, same photo, different ID numbers and same fingerprints. Just in case you thought you’ve seen a lot,” stated the user.

Fact Check by The Kenya Times
A fact check by The Kenya Times has determined that the photo was first shared online by a user @0000001 on Instagram in 2017.
At the time, the photo was shared to call out an individual who had cloned himself to vote multiple times during that year’s general elections.
Later, in December the same year, blogger and data science specialist Linet Kwamboka, published an article on Medium, highlighting the dangers of identity theft.
She referenced the photo, conducting a fact check of her own.
“The same individual had cloned himself 6 times, using what you would think are “fake details” of a national identity card number. At first stance, I thought that the numbers that are used on the various cards were made up. So I decided to put these thoughts to a test,” stated the author.
First, this means that the image is an old photo, and the IDs were not printed during the current administration’s tenure.

IDs Search on the IEBC Portal
We have also conducted a search on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) registration verification and learnt that the ID numbers belong to registered voters of Kenya. The information can be accessed freely on the public website.
According to IEBC, two of the IDs contain accurate information belonging to two Kenyan voters. However, the rest of the documents have altered information.
In some, the ID numbers do not match the name provided by the electoral commission. In others, the constituency has been completely altered even though the name matches the identification number.
For instance, Edward Karanja’s details including ID number and date of birth, belonged to Mary Njeri from Embakasi East Constituency. The names and ID numbers of John Maina and Stanley Murithi were not recognized by the system.
