At just 15 years old, Derrick Odour found himself behind bars at Shikusa Borstal Institution in Kakamega County.
He was arrested for mobile money fraud after falling in with the wrong group.
He entered the juvenile correctional facility as a frightened teenager with no blanket, no mattress, just guilt and fear.
But what was meant to break him instead became the foundation for a life rebuilt.
“The experience in the cell was hectic,” Odour said. “I regret it, but it opened opportunities for me.”
Derrick Odour’s Passion

“After leaving juvenile, I decided to pursue my passion of joining the military,” he said.
Odour frequently returns to Shikusa as a mentor, encouraging current inmates to learn from their mistakes and envision a better future.
“I would advise youths to check on their groups,” he said. “Do not find yourself on the wrong side of the law.”
