Kamukunji Gateway Mall is an eight-storey shopping complex situated in the Kamukunji Trade Centre of Nairobi City County.
Nancy Wamaitha owns the building, and she is credited with having worked hard to accumulate her wealth.
According to testimonies, Wamaitha started as a second-hand clothes (mitumba) seller, reinvested her earnings, and steadily built her capital base
President William Ruto opened the Mall during a visit to Nairobi’s Kamukunji area on July 2, 2021.
Ruto also confirmed that Wamaitha started mitumba seller and worked her way up the ladder.
Opened the eight-storey Kamukunji Gateway Mall, whose proprietor began as a mitumba businesswoman and engaged local traders in Kamukunji, Nairobi County.
This occurred during the 2022 election campaigns, and Ruto utilized Wamaitha’s story to promote his ‘bottom-up economic agenda’ and the ‘hustler narrative’.
Bishop Confirms Her Journey
Former Starehe MP Bishop Margaret Wanjiru also confirmed that Wamaitha started as a mitumba seller at Kamukunji market.
In a statement released in July 2021, Bishop Wanjiru confirmed that Wamaitha is a member of the Jesus Is Alive Ministries (JIAM) Church.
Wanjiru said she had known the businesswoman for several years before the mall was launched.

Wamaitha Seeks Christ
The bishop said Wamaitha was hopeless, broke, and lacked direction when she first met her.
However, Wanjiru said Wamaitha joined her Ministry, followed God’s teaching faithfully, and her breakthrough came.
“As a mother, mentor, and spiritual leader, I am exceedingly happy to see my spiritual daughter, Nancy Wamaitha, in the faith, launching this magnificent building today – Kamukunji Gateway Mall. I first met her many years ago when she was broken, without hope, resources, or direction. She joined our Church and followed the teachings faithfully, and the grace for success in my life was imparted to her life,” bishop Wanjiru said.

How Nancy Wamaitha Expanded from Mitumba Business
Bishop Wanjiru said Wamaitha grew from selling clothes to owning the prestigious building.
She narrated how Wamaitha transitioned from selling mitumba to cereals, then to shoes, at Kamukunji Market.
I have seen her grow from faith to faith and glory to glory from selling clothes in a paper bag, then cereals, until she started selling shoes at Kamukunji market. By the grace of God, she has grown and managed to build this 8-floor mall that will host thousands of traders.
