From a local transport operator to one of the most dominant fleets on Thika Road, Neo Kenya Mpya has become a major player in Kenya’s commuter transport sector.
The Founding of Neo Kenya Mpya
Neo Kenya Mpya was founded in 2002 and grew rapidly as demand for commuter transport along the Nairobi-Thika corridor increased.
The company established itself on routes linking Nairobi, Thika, Makongeni, and Kenol, becoming one of the most recognisable PSV operators in the region.
While Neo Kenya Mpya was founded in 2002, company records show the operating company, Neo Kenya Mpya Commuters Limited, is controlled by the Njiru family through a shareholding structure that gives them full ownership of the transport firm.
The shareholding is distributed among four family members:
- Patrick Njiru Kiria – 500 shares
- Leah Njeri Njiru (wife) – 300 shares
- Douglas Kuria Njiru (son) – 100 shares
- Everlyn Wangui Njiru (daughter) – 100 shares
The shareholding structure gives the Njiru family full control of the transport company.

Beyond Neo Kenya Mpya, Patrick Njiru Kuria has interests in several other businesses.
He is associated with Paleah Stores Ltd and has also been linked to For-you Carriers, expanding his footprint beyond the transport sector.
The businessman is also the brother of former Kirinyaga Woman Representative Purity Wangui Ngirici, one of Kenya’s most prominent business and political figures.
Over the years, Neo Kenya Mpya expanded beyond its original routes and became the largest PSV fleet operating along the Thika Superhighway.
The company later ventured onto additional routes, including sections of Kangundo Road, to expand its market presence.
By 2021, the company managed about 170 buses and served an estimated 46,000 commuters daily across Nairobi, Kiambu, and Machakos counties.
Under the family’s leadership, the company has explored modernisation initiatives, including the adoption of electric bus technology as part of efforts to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs.
The company’s second generation is already involved in management.
Douglas Kuria Njiru, who studied at Strathmore University and later earned an MBA from Cardiff Metropolitan University, serves in a senior management role within the company.
