Peter Munya is a Kenyan politician who has served as a governor and a cabinet secretary, among other positions.

Munya was born and raised in Muthaara, Tigania in Kenya’s Meru County.
He is the son of Jackson Munya M’Rukunga and Grace Mwakithi.

Munya attended Chogoria Boys High School for his ‘O’ levels before proceeding to Meru School for his ‘A’ levels.
He graduated from University of Nairobi in 1993 with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree with a 2nd class honors lower division.

During his time at UoN, he served as chairman of the Kenya Law Students Society (KLSS).
He holds a master’s degree in international Economic Integration Law from the University of Brussels in Belgium.
Additionally, he holds a master’s degree in public and international law.
Wife and Family
Munya is married to Phoebe. They have two children, Karauni and Nkio.
Work and Experience
His first jobs were at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies and the Kenya School of Professional Studies where he worked as a law lecturer immediately after returning to the country.
He taught for two years before starting his law firm Kimaiyo and Munya Advocates.
In 1977, he was published in the Boston University international law journal under the title “The Role of the Organization of African Unity in Conflict Resolution and Dispute Settlement in Africa”.
He was also Published in the Moi University journal under the title “The Role of the international court of justice in Resolving African Disputes: past, present and future prospects” in 2002.

Peter Munya Political Career
Munya joined politics in 2002 when he vied for the Tigania East constituency seat and won.
President Mwai Kibaki appointed him as the assistant minister of Internal Security and Provincial Administration in 2006.
He retained his seat in the 2007 general elections.
He proceeded to serve as assistant minister for the East African Community in the then coalition government.
Meru County Governor
Munya contested for the Meru County gubernatorial position in the 2013 general elections.
He won by a slight margin against his main rival, Kilemi Mwiria, who later challenged his victory in court.
The Court of Appeal nullified his election on March 14, 2014, but this ruling was overturned by the Supreme Court.
He served as the Chairman of the Council of Governors for two years from May 2015 until May 2017.

Cabinet
He would later be appointed to Uhuru’s cabinet after losing to Kiraitu Murungi in the 2017 general elections.
Munya served as CS for East Africa Community and Northern Corridor Development from July 2018 to January 2020.
He replaced Mwangi Kiunjuri as the CS for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Cooperatives.
Munya currently serves as the party leader of the Party of National Unity (PNU).
Net Worth
His net worth was estimated at about Ksh291 million as of the year 2020.
Besides his salary from the various positions he has held, Munya has interests in agriculture and real estate.
He has also had an extensive career as a lawyer, MP, governor and CS.
