Cromwell Hospital in London is the private medical facility where Kenya’s former President, the late Daniel arap Moi, received specialist treatment and where former First Lady, the late Lucy Kibaki, died in 2016.

The hospital, located in Kensington, London, has provided specialist medical services for decades to patients from the United Kingdom and other countries, including high-profile international patients.

Cromwell Hospital was established in 1981 and has grown into a major private healthcare facility offering specialist services in areas such as cardiology, cancer care, orthopedics, complex surgery and critical care.

Bupa acquired the hospital in March 2008, bringing it into the company’s UK healthcare operations, and it subsequently became known as Bupa Cromwell Hospital.

Moi’s Treatment at Cromwell Hospital

Former President Daniel Arap Moi received medical treatment at Cromwell Hospital during one of his visits to London after leaving office.

Moi, who served as Kenya’s second President from 1978 to 2002, often traveled abroad for specialist medical care.

One of the medical emergencies he experienced in London involved an abnormal heart rhythm.

Moi’s personal physician, Dr David Silverstein, later said that the former president developed a rapid and irregular heartbeat while traveling.

The condition was diagnosed as atrial fibrillation, prompting arrangements for Moi to receive specialist cardiac treatment in London.

Moi was taken to Cromwell Hospital in London, where cardiologist Dr Steve Jenkins treated him. Doctors performed a cardioversion procedure to restore his normal heart rhythm.

His heart rhythm was successfully restored, after which he was placed on anticoagulant medication.

Moi also underwent treatment in London for a condition affecting the nerves in both elbows.

Lucy Kibaki’s Final Days

Former First Lady Lucy Kibaki was flown to London in April 2016 for further medical care and was admitted to Bupa Cromwell Hospital.

Mama Lucy, the wife of Kenya’s third President Mwai Kibaki, had initially been receiving treatment at the Nairobi Hospital, a high-end healthcare facility in Upper Hill.

She was flown to London in April 2016 for further medical care and was admitted to Bupa Cromwell Hospital.

Lucy died at the London facility on April 26, 2016, aged 75.

Then President Uhuru Kenyatta announced her death, describing her as a woman who had made a significant contribution to Kenya.

“Especially notable was her virtues of leadership and commitment to improving the well-being of the ordinary Kenyans, in particular her focus on tackling HIV/AIDS, which will remain an inspiration to many,” President Kenyatta said.

Lucy had served as Kenya’s First Lady between 2002 and 2013, during Mwai Kibaki’s presidency. She was known for her public campaigns on health and social issues, including HIV/AIDS, and for her outspoken public appearances.

Where Is Cromwell Hospital?

Bupa Cromwell Hospital is situated on Cromwell Road in Kensington, an affluent area of central London.

The hospital was established as a purpose-built private medical facility in 1981 and has since expanded its specialist services and medical technology.

Its location places it close to  London institutions and residential areas in Kensington and surrounding parts of west London.

The hospital treats both British and international patients and has facilities for patients traveling to the UK to access specialist medical care.

Cromwell Hospital provides a wide range of specialist and complex medical services.

Its areas of care include cardiology and heart surgery, cancer diagnosis and treatment, orthopaedics, intensive care, diagnostic imaging and complex surgical procedures.

The hospital also provides specialist care for international patients, with medical teams handling consultations, diagnosis and treatment for patients traveling from outside the United Kingdom.

Its private healthcare model allows patients to access specialist treatment outside Britain’s National Health Service system.
