A teacher who rose through the ranks to work under the Executive Office of the President has passed away. Rose Wambui Wanjohi, who started as a secondary school teacher, died on July 2, 2025, after years of battling cancer.
Her death was announced by her family in an obituary on July 9. Born in 1966 in Nyeri County, Wambui attended Kenyatta University for her undergraduate studies after completing her secondary education.
Having pursued her undergraduate and master’s degrees, she began her career as a secondary school teacher serving in various high schools. She would later rise through the ranks to the level of a high school principal.
This was before she transitioned to the Ministry of Education as a Quality Assurance and Standard Officer, where she played a pivotal role in improving standards and policies within the education sector.

She served in that capacity in various counties before moving to the ministry’s headquarters.
The teacher advanced her studies in Human Resource Management and was deployed back to the ministry’s headquarters.

Wambui, who is a recipient of the Order of the Grand Warrior (O.G.W) award, also served in various ministries over the years.
In addition, she undertook specialized professional training locally and abroad ultimately becoming the Director of Human Resource Management at the Cabinet Office under the Executive Office of the President.
Colleagues who worked with Rose at the Executive Office of the President, headed by the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, were among mourners who sent a glowing tribute during her memorial service at the PCEA Kenyatta Road.

The colleagues celebrated her as a committed lady who gave her all.
“She worked in the office up to the last week before she proceeded to India for treatment. Madam Rose was heading one of the departments in that office as the Director for Human Resource Management and Development. We knew her as a committed Christian,” part of the tribute read.
“As an office we have lost a committed head of department we have lost a great mentor, and we have lost a member of staff that can be very difficult to replace.”
The former teacher married her husband in 1991 with whom they had three children. Rose has also left behind grandchildren.
The funeral service and burial will take place on Friday, July 11.
