DNA testing charges in Kenya vary primarily based on whether you are seeking a government service or a private facility.
Effective January 2025, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) officially increased its standard paternity test price by 35%, setting the lowest charge at Ksh 27,000, up from the initial Ksh 20,000.
Having approximately 10 to 27 distinct institutions in Kenya recognized for offering DNA testing services and nearly 2,000 bioinformaticians in the country, prices vary based on the number of participants, the type of genetic markers tested, and whether the results are for peace of mind or legal use.
Prominent DNA Testing Centers
KEMRI Human DNA Identification Lab is the primary public facility for forensic, immigration, and family testing, with a starting cost of Ksh27,000, up from KSh 20,000 in Jan 2025.
The Nairobi Hospital is a facility that requires both parents to be present for paternity testing to ensure ethical standards, and charges between Ksh 20,000 and Ksh 30,000.
Easy DNA Kenya offers specialized tests like non-invasive prenatal paternity testing (NIPPT) at a cost range of Ksh 24,000 – Ksh 40,000, depending on test complexity, with results typically available in 3-5 days.
Alpha Biolabs Kenya specializes in high-accuracy prenatal and immigration testing, charging between Ksh 20,000 for standard DNA tests and Ksh 150,000 for prenatal (unborn child) DNA tests.

Aga Khan University Hospital is a premium private hospital with international accreditation, offering high-quality genetic testing services.
Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), serving as the largest national referral hospital, offers DNA testing through its genetics department at competitive rates and typically follows the competitive government-adjacent pricing, often mirroring or slightly undercutting private labs, but many referrals are sent directly to KEMRI.
PathCare and Lancet Laboratories Kenya are major providers of pathology services, including various genetic and PCR tests, with standard paternity tests priced between KSh 25,000 and KSh 45,000.
The Kenya Institute of Bioinformatics (KIBS) (Bioinformatics) charges between Ksh 30,000 and Ksh 40,000 and KSh 15k-20k per person (father + child).
DNA Facility Categories
The facilities are of three primary types of providers:
Public or Government Institutions are two: KEMRI and KNH
Major Private Multi-Specialty Hospitals comprise three facilities: The Nairobi Hospital, Aga Khan University Hospital, and The Karen Hospital.
Specialized Labs and Diagnostic Centers range from 5 to 22, with independent Labs including PathCare Lancet Kenya, Metropolis, and Nyumbani Diagnostic Laboratory.

Specialized DNA Centers are facilities like EasyDNA Kenya, DDC/DNA Bioscience Center, AlphaBiolabs Kenya, and the Kenya Institute of Bioinformatics (KIBS).
DNA Considerations
Legal vs. Personal- these are the “Peace of mind” tests, mostly done using home kits.
They are cheaper but not admissible in court.
Legal tests require a chain of custody, meaning samples must be collected by a professional with identity verification, and they can be a bit costly.
Sample Types: standard tests use painless mouth swabs, also called buccal swabs, while non-standard samples, such as hair, toothbrushes, or fingernails, may incur additional laboratory processing fees.
Timeframe- most private clinics deliver results within 2 to 5 working days.
DNA test, also known as a genetic or genomic test, is a scientific procedure that analyzes an individual’s unique genetic code, which is the instructions for life found in every cell.
