The Ministry of Health has clarified the government’s salary structure for medical interns following recent public debate over their remuneration.
In a statement issued on July 1, 2025, the Ministry said intern doctors will earn a basic monthly salary of Ksh 46,120, as outlined in their official posting letters.
However, when allowances tied to their job group (CSG 9/JG ‘L’) are factored in, the total monthly pay rises to approximately Ksh 208,000.
Despite Health CS Aden Duale announcing they would earn their agreed two hundred and six thousand shillings (Ksh 260K) per the 2017 CBA, the Kenyan Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union says the allowance will vary per posting.

“The Ministry of Health wishes to clarify that the posting letters for intern doctors specify a basic salary of Kshs. 46,120 per month, with allowances applicable,” read part of the notice.
The clarification comes a few days after the Ministry announced that the new cohort of interns will be posted from July 2, 2025, and are set to work for the first 12 months.
“The Ministry of Health will post the next cohort of medical interns with effect from July 1, 2025. To facilitate a smooth posting process, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) will conduct balloting for pre-intern graduates on Wednesday, April 30, 2025,” the Ministry of Health confirmed.

The Ministry deployed 6,484 interns for a year-long supervised clinical training in accredited hospitals.
