The government is considering adopting tougher regulations on the sale of the “blue pill” following reports of unauthorized use and rising health risks.

In a statement on Sunday, Public Health Principal Secretary (PS) Mary Muthoni warned that sildenafil, a prescription-only medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), can cause life-threatening complications such as heart attack and stroke if misused. She urged patients to consult a doctor or pharmacist before using the drug.

“The ‘blue pill’ is strictly a prescription-only medicine and not available over the counter. It is primarily used to treat ED and PAH, and misuse can have serious health consequences,” noted PS Muthoni.

According to the PS, several regulatory measures have already been implemented. These include a monitoring system requiring wholesalers to document and report sales to retailers, audits of pharmacies reviewing prescription records for controlled dispensing, and public education campaigns on the dangers of using prescription medicines without a valid prescription.

PS Muthoni’s warning comes amid reports of rising cases of unauthorized blue pill use, which in some instances have been linked to deaths.

In a recent media interview, men who admitted to using the drug to achieve longer-lasting or stronger erections, enhance sexual performance, or boost confidence in bed.

Some cited fear of inadequacy and embarrassment, while others mentioned growing sexual pressure and expectations from partners.

Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor, who has researched erectile dysfunction and the use of Viagra, explained that sildenafil and similar drugs function as vasodilators, meaning they widen blood vessels by inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5).

In the penis, this increases blood flow and facilitates an erection. The exact mechanism allows sildenafil to be used for pulmonary hypertension, altitude sickness, and even jet lag management.

However, Dr. Oduor cautioned that these effects are not isolated to the genital area. Other blood vessels are also affected, which can be dangerous for individuals with narrowed coronary arteries or weakened hearts.

Sudden changes in blood pressure and vascular load can be fatal if the drug is used without medical supervision.

“Erectile dysfunction can be emotionally and psychologically challenging, but there is no shame in seeking help,” Dr. Oduor said.

“It is critical that individuals consult medical professionals before using any sexual enhancement medication. ED is often a symptom of a deeper health issue, such as diabetes or heart disease. Using performance drugs without identifying and treating the underlying cause can lead to tragic outcomes.”

Side Effects Associated with the Pill

  • Headache: The most frequently reported side effect.
  • Flushing: A sudden feeling of warmth or redness in the face and neck.
  • Digestive Issues: Indigestion, heartburn, nausea, or stomach upset.
