Panic has gripped the coastal city of Mombasa following the sudden and unexplained deaths of four people in Migadini, Matangini Village.
According to a statement released by the Mombasa County Department of Health on July 15, the victims, three men and one woman died between July 9 and July 14 under what authorities are calling “unclear circumstances.”
The deceased include a 91-year-old woman who passed away at home on July 9, and three men aged 55, 57, and 69 whose bodies were found in various stages of decomposition on July 14.
All four are reported to have suffered from chronic health conditions, with one recently treated for dengue fever and another reportedly asthmatic.
Ministry on Possible Mysterious Disease
Health officials have launched a formal investigation and are urging residents to remain calm and take precautions.
The deaths have sparked widespread concern among residents, with fears of a possible outbreak of a contagious disease.

However, county officials stated that there is currently no evidence pointing to an infectious cause.
“Although the health department has not found any evidence of an infectious disease at this stage, we urge the public to exercise caution,” the statement read.
The remains have been transferred to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where post-mortem examinations and further medical evaluations are underway.
“The remains of the deceased are preserved at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, awaiting post-mortem examination and further evaluation,” the health department said in a statement.
Measures for Mombasa Residents
Health officials are urging residents to report any missing persons to community leaders or health workers.
Avoid direct contact with human remains and immediately notify authorities of any such findings.
Maintain high standards of personal hygiene, including regular handwashing with soap or sanitizer.

“Adhere to a high level of personal hygiene, including handwashing with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitiser,” the statement further advised.
Seek medical attention promptly if experiencing any symptoms of illness.
The County’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre remains on high alert and is closely monitoring the situation.

This comes barely two weeks after the Ministry of Health posted 6,484 healthcare interns under the 2025/2026 Internship Cohort.
In a statement issued on June 27, 2025, the Ministry of Health confirmed that the deployment of healthcare interns was scheduled to begin on July 1, 2025.
“The Ministry of Health, in fulfilment of its commitment to ensure the timely deployment of interns by 1st July 2025, is pleased to announce the official posting of 6,484 healthcare interns under the 2025/2026 Internship Cohort,” read the statement.
