The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has closed Scion Hospital maternity ward pending the completion of investigations into its maternity services.
In a statement on May 17, 2025, the Council said it has taken note of the matter and has initiated a formal inquiry in accordance with its regulatory mandate.
“As investigations are underway, the maternity ward at Scion Hospital has been ordered closed with immediate effect to ensure patient safety and preserve the integrity of the ongoing review,” KMPDC said.
The Council stated that it remains committed to upholding the highest standards of medical care and will take all necessary actions based on the outcomes of the investigation.
Scion Hospital Causes Uproar
Scion Hospital in Nairobi’s Imara Daima came under public scrutiny following allegations of medical negligence shared by a young woman on Instagram.
In her emotional account, the woman claimed her unborn baby died in the womb after she was left unattended for hours during a medical emergency.
She says she arrived at the hospital late Tuesday night in distress, showing signs of pregnancy complications. By 1 am on Wednesday, 14, 2025, her baby had died, but despite repeatedly seeking help, she alleges that no urgent medical attention was provided.
“My heart is broken and I’m so angry that I cannot even find the words to describe what I’m feeling. Her life mattered and justice will be served. She is a person and didn’t deserve to die like that,” she said in her Instagram post.

Reactions From Kenyans
Her story has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many Kenyans expressing shock over the events she described.
Others took the opportunity to share their own troubling experiences in private hospitals, stating a growing concern over the state of emergency maternal care in the country.
Popular gospel musician Kambua joined many Kenyans in condemning the incident at Scion Hospital.
“It’s not business as usual when our babies and mothers are dying in the hands of those meant to take care of them. It is unacceptable! You don’t even have to be a parent to know that this is pure inhumane. We must condemn injustice,” she said.
Moreover, fellow mothers also took time to send messages of consolation and offer comfort to her during this difficult time.
“My God! I’m so sorry darling. May you find comfort and justice,” Kenyan Comedian Nkirote said.
