The Social Health Authority (SHA) has reminded employers to remit Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) contributions for their employees on time.
In a notice on September 5, SHA stressed that contributions must be paid by the 9th day of every month to avoid penalties.
Employers who fail to meet the deadline, the authority warns, will face a 2 per cent penalty on the outstanding amount, compounded monthly until the dues are settled.
Consequences for late SHA payments
SHA stated that this measure is aimed at enforcing compliance and ensuring the sustainability of the national health insurance scheme.
“Any employer who fails to remit employee contributions by the due date shall be liable to a penalty of two per cent of the amount due, compounded monthly,” the authority warned in its notice.
The Social Health Authority further stressed that timely remittance is not optional but a legal obligation.
The contributions are designed to guarantee continuous healthcare coverage for employees under the new insurance framework.
The authority urged employers to take the warning seriously to avoid unnecessary financial losses and to safeguard the health benefits of their workforce.
Lipa SHA Pole Pole initiative
Mwangangi’s warning comes about two months after the government unveiled the Lipa SHA Pole Pole initiative to allow Kenyans in the informal sector to pay for the health insurance scheme more flexibly and simply.
Speaking on June 1, during the 62nd Madaraka Day Celebration, President Ruto said the initiative would assist many unemployed Kenyans to access healthcare.

Ruto’s sentiments were backed by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, who hailed the programme as a practical step towards an equitable healthcare system.
“This is a significant milestone in our journey towards Universal Health Coverage. We are strengthening our promise to deliver healthcare that is accessible, flexible, and inclusive,” Duale said.
1.5 million Kenyans to Enjoy Full SHA Services Free
On September 2, Ruto said the national government will ensure 1.5 million Kenyans who cannot afford to pay for the social health insurance are registered and their contribution paid for from the week beginning on September 8.
“From next week, we are going to pay for the 1.5 million Kenyans who have no capacity to pay. We will pay for them,” Ruto promised.

Ruto stated that he will also hold a meeting with Governors and Members of Parliament (MPs) to provide additional support to those in need.
He said the county governments can support an additional 1 million Kenyans, while the MPs also have the capacity to support more.
