The government, through the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, in partnership with the World Bank Group, has announced internship opportunities under the Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project (HoAGW4RP).
In a notice dated Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the Ministry stated that the programme is open to recent graduates seeking to build practical skills and experience in the water sector.
“The Internship program is targeting the young professionals, particularly the young graduates with a bachelor’s degree certificate and having obtained the said qualification not more than two years before the date of this advertisement,” read part of the notice.
Funded by the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA), the initiative aims to enhance groundwater accessibility and sustainable management in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid regions, including Turkana, Wajir, Garissa, Marsabit and Mandera.
Ministry of Water Announces Internship Opportunities
The programme, which will run for 12 months, is designed to bridge the gap between academic training and practical work experience for graduates in fields such as geology, hydrogeology, environmental science, GIS, hydrology, and data science. A total of 45 interns will be selected for the first cohort, set to begin in the third quarter of 2025.

According to the ministry, the internship targets young professionals, particularly those with background qualifications in fields such as water resources management, hydrology, civil engineering, data science, GIS, environmental science, hydrogeology, climate change, policy analysis, and related disciplines.
Successful candidates will be deployed at field stations and project implementation units across various counties where the HoAGW4RP is being executed.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Intern
- Complete tasks assigned by their supervisors /mentors.
- Document the skills acquired during the internship.
- Participate in mentorship activities and additional program responsibilities.
- Adhere to quarterly monitoring and evaluation requirement in the internship program
- Be ready to be deployed to any relevant office or workstation within the institutions implementing the HoAGW4R project where there may be an internship vacancy
- Abide to the rules and regulations of the public institution
- Make effort to acquire relevant skills in the area of specialization
- Observe confidentiality of information and security of tools and or equipment that are placed in the possession of the intern in the course of the internship programme
- Ensure clearance by the relevant authority before leaving the internship station
Eligibility Criteria for Applicants
- Be Kenyan citizens aged 18–35 years
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution in a relevant field
- Have graduated no more than two years prior to the date of application
- Possess good communication and writing skills
- Demonstrate discipline, commitment, and a positive attitude

Selected interns will receive a monthly stipend and field allowances as per government guidelines. Upon completion, they will be awarded certificates and gain hands-on experience in groundwater management, policy development, and fieldwork.
