The registrar of political parties Anne Nderitu has warned elected leaders against ditching parties or coalitions that sponsored them to parliament even before being sworn in.
The warning comes barely days after some small parties allied to Azimio-One Kenya joined the Kenya Kwanza camp led by President-Elect William Ruto
Nderitu says the move by leaders who have ditched their sponsoring coalitions is illegal.
“Politicians seeking to shift allegiance to other coalitions will have to terminate their initial pacts and it’s a process,” she said.
The registrar clarified the law doesn’t envisage a situation where a single party can be a signatory to more than one coalition.
Nderitu clarified that so far she hasn’t received a request from any party that wants to leave a coalition.
“So it remains to be seen, legally, how the pre and post-election agreements will work out,” she tweeted.
Azimio protested the manner in which some of its members were reportedly being lured to join the Kenya Kwanza alliance.
