On January 2, 2026, tragedy struck when a 14‑storey residential apartment under construction collapsed in Nairobi’s South C estate.
Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku vowed stern action against all individuals found culpable in the collapse of a multi-storey building in Nairobi.
Ruku said that preliminary investigations indicate gross negligence and a blatant disregard of lawful construction orders.
The owner and developer behind the building that collapsed was identified as Yussuf Mohamed Yussuf.
The National Construction Authority (NCA) stated that consultants listed on the project include architect Gideon Chege Mwangi, engineer Peter Kimani Kireru and quantity surveyor James Kirika Njoroge. The sole director of Abyan Consulting Limited is Yussuf Mohamed Yussuf.
“The developer on record is Abyan Consulting Limited, which also served as the contractor,” the Authority said.

Yussuf Mohamed Yussuf is a seasoned Civil and Structural Engineer with over 15 years of professional experience in the design, supervision, and management of large-scale infrastructure projects.
Yussuf is a skilled professional with a background in both civil engineering and project management.
He holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (Structures) from the University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore, Pakistan where he graduated in 2007.
Additionally, he holds an Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) in Project Management from Preston University, Islamabad Campus, Pakistan, earned in 2005.
He also earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Engineering & Technology, Taxila, Pakistan, in 2003.

Currently serving as the CEO and Senior Civil Engineer at Abyan Consulting ltd in East Africa based in Nairobi, Kenya, Yussuf has been instrumental in the design and supervision of various residential, commercial, and industrial structures.
His role involves overseeing large-scale projects, including office buildings, hospitals, high-rise towers, and water/sewerage infrastructure.
Some of his notable projects include the design and supervision of Aflah Apartments, Naim Tower, Golden Tower, and Darajo Tower in Nairobi.

Yussuf has contributed to a range of development projects in Somalia and Kenya, including serving as an IDP Resettlement Advisor with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and as a Consultant Engineer under the UNDP/PREP programme.
In these roles, he worked on infrastructure development initiatives such as the design and supervision of markets, playgrounds, and fish markets in Garowe and Galkayo, Somalia.
Over the course of his career, Yussuf has built extensive expertise in civil engineering, structural design, project management, and construction supervision.
He is proficient in several industry-standard software applications, including STAAD Pro, PROKON, ArchiCAD, AutoCAD, and the Microsoft Office Suite.
