Fatuma Achani is a Kenyan politician who has been serving as the Governor of Kwale County since 2022.
She was the Deputy Governor of Kwale County for ten years before becoming governor.
Achani is notable for being the first female governor in the Coast region and Kenya’s first female Muslim governor.
Educational Background of Fatuma Achani
Fatuma Mohamed Achani attended Maji ya Chumvi Primary School in Kwale County before proceeding to Bura Girls High School in Taita Taveta County, where she completed her secondary education.
She later pursued law at Moi University, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.
Achani also holds a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, which qualified her as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
Career
Before joining politics, Achani worked as a lawyer and development worker. She served as a programme officer with the International Republican Institute (IRI) and worked in legal practice, focusing on governance, constitutionalism, and women’s empowerment.
Her political career began in 2013, when she was chosen as the running mate of Salim Mvurya in Kwale County’s first gubernatorial election.
She was elected Deputy Governor and served from 2013 to 2017.
In the 2017 general election, she retained her position as Deputy Governor, serving for a second term from 2017 to 2022.
During the August 2022 general election, Achani contested the governorship under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
She was elected as the first female governor of Kwale County, succeeding her former boss, Salim Mvurya.

Fatuma Achani was born in Kingwede Village, Msambweni Sub-County, to Muslim parents.
