From KBC Intern to Dr Joe Ageyo: Kenyan Journalist Taking His PhD to Uganda

For more than two decades, Joe Ageyo has built a career around journalism, moving between reporting, television production, and editorial leadership.

The veteran journalist has now taken on a new assignment outside Kenya after Nation Media Group appointed him Editor-in-Chief of its Uganda operations on September 16, 2026.

Ageyo, who had been serving as NMG’s Group Editor-in-Chief in Kenya, will oversee the company’s editorial operations in Uganda, including Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM and Dembe FM.

Joe Ageyo Career Background

Joe Ageyo began his journalism career with an internship at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) in 1998, where he spent 18 months working without pay.

He later joined the Standard Group and rose through the ranks at KTN from Deputy News Editor to Managing Editor between 2000 and 2018.

His nearly 18 years at the media company gave him extensive experience in news production and editorial management.

In 2005, Ageyo joined Nation Media Group first as Head of News Production, a position he held for nearly eight years.

He returned to senior editorial leadership in 2023 when he became NMG’s Editor-in-Chief, overseeing the group’s editorial operations and the operationalization of its integrated newsroom.

Between 2018 and 2022, he served as Editorial Director at Royal Media Services, adding another senior leadership role to his career across Kenya’s major media houses.

Additionally, he has co-moderated presidential debates in Kenya and served on the steering committees that organized the.

Education Background

Ageyo holds a PhD in Communication and Media Studies from Daystar University, which he completed in November 2025.

Between 2010 and 2011, he undertook a Fellowship in Environmental Leadership at the Aspen Institute of Multi Studies.

He previously earned a Master of Science in Environmental Governance from the University of Manchester in 2009 and a Certificate in Advanced Studies in Environmental Diplomacy from the University of Geneva in 2007.

Ageyo holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi, which he completed between 1997 and 1998.

He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Economics and Business Management from Egerton University, where he studied between 1992 and 1996. He also served as an official of the Students’ Union.

Joe Ageyo as an Author and Achievement

Ageyo has authored two book chapters. One, titled The Tuner and Tube, appears in Pioneers, Rebels and a Few Villains: 150 Years of Journalism in Africa, published by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.

The other, Remote Options: Experimenting with Television Journalism in East Africa, appears in Media Pandemics: Seeking Journalistic Answers in Eastern Africa, published by the East Africa Editors’ Forum.

He has also published in academic journals, including Sustainability, where he co-authored the article Beyond Access: A Critique of the Legalist Approach to Dissemination of Climate Change Information in Kenya.

In late 2024, Ageyo joined the leadership board of the World Editors Forum, becoming part of the global body representing editors and editorial leaders in the news industry.
