Irene Jepkemboi has made history in Kenya, becoming the first Kenyan woman to win a field event medal during the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games on August 1.
Irene was awarded a bronze medal in the women’s javelin throw of approximately 57.85m at the Scotstoun Stadium.
AS a bronze medal holder, Irene secured the third place in the competition. At the same time, Australia’s Mackenzie Little claimed gold with a season’s best 61.88 meters, and New Zealand’s Tori Moorby was awarded a silver with 60.04 meters.
Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sport Salim Mvurya has congratulated Irene for giving kenya the first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in women’s javelin.
“Congratulations, Irene Jepkemboi, on winning Kenya’s bronze medal in the women’s javelin throw at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with a best throw of 57.85m. Your historic performance has earned Kenya its first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s javelin. Your faith, resilience, and determination have not gone unnoticed,” part of the congratulatory message read on August 2.
Early Life and Family
Irene Jepkemboi was born on February 5, 2004, and grew up in Uasin Gishu County.
Unlike many celebrated Kenyan athletes who specialize in distance running, Jepkemboi found her passion in field events during her school years.
According to Irene, she initially participated in football and the high jump before eventually focusing on javelin throw after encouragement from her teachers.
During interviews, Irene has spoken about the challenges of pursuing a field event in a country where track disciplines often receive greater attention and support.
Despite limited resources and training equipment during her formative years, she remained committed to improving her technique and performance.
“When I joined Complete Sports, I was the only field athlete, doing javelin. I struggled without a coach and no good facilities, but I was so focused on achieving my dream. With food and accommodation, even without a coach, I had a humble time to train. Then I got a chance to compete at the Athletics Kenya events where I threw 52m at the Nyayo Stadium,” Irene explained during an interview at the Complete Sports Training camp in Kaptagat.
Irene is the fifth born in a family of six and is the only family member who engages in sports.
In an interview, Irene stated that in her family, she was the first person to board a plane, as she traveled to the USA, and has always expressed gratitude to her family for the support in her career.

Education Background
Jepkemboi studied at Emkwen Primary School in Uasin Gishu.
After completion of her primary education, Irene joined Kaptebengewet High School to further her education.
At the high school, Irene invested in her javelin talent through participation in school competitions and regional championships.
After completing secondary school, she joined the Complete Sports Training Camp in Kaptagat, where she continued sharpening her javelin skills.
Following Irene’s performances in field events, she attracted international attention and earned her an opportunity to pursue athletics in the United States.
Jepkemboi later secured a scholarship to Texas Christian University (TCU), where she joined the Horned Frogs athletics program as a javelin throw specialist.

Irene Jepkemboi’s Javelin Career and Achievements
Jepkemboi’s javelin achievement at the continental level came in 2023 at the African Under-20 Championships in Ndola, Zambia.
During the 2023 championship, Irene won a silver medal in the women’s javelin throw and later secured the Kenyan national title.
In March 2024, Irene broke the Kenyan national record with a throw of 57.23 meters at the Texas A&M Invitational.
In addition, during the 2024 season, Irene won the Big 12 Conference title and finished fourth at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships, earning First Team All-American honors.
In 2025, Irene Jepkemboi registered throws of 57.93 meters and 58.36 meters before producing a historic performance at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
At the NCAA Championships in June 2025, Jepkemboi threw a national record 60.31 meters to claim the bronze medal.
The 2025 throw made Irene the first Kenyan woman in history to break the 60-meter barrier in the javelin.
Later, Irene represented Kenya at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, becoming the first Kenyan woman to compete in the javelin throw at the global event.
In 2026, Jepkemboi marked a historic chapter in her career by winning bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a throw of 57.85 meters.
